Help with Zelda Ocarina of Time! Plz

Havent played this game in yeeeaaarrss. Im in the Deku Tree trying to defeat the Deku Scrub to get through the next door to get the slingshot. How do you defeat him? Cuz everytime I get close to him he sinks back down and stays until i move away.
