DVD RW used to read&burn CDs, now it doesn't.

Hi, I have a Lite-on DVDRW LDW-811S dvd rw drive which used to read and burn CDs just fine, but recently it just stopped reading CDs altogether. It still reads and burns DVDs, but cant even identify CDs. So far I have tried reinstalling the driver, trying a new driver, and I have had no reaction so far. Could this have something to do with XP SP2? Any help would be GREATLY appriciated

while its not closely similar i used to have a problem on my combo drive where occasionally it would stop redognizing blank cd's. what always seems to work for me to fix this is updating the firmware. maybe try that?

I tried that, but got no effect.

i have the same prob with my dvdr, i reckon the cd laser duffed up.

Yeap... Unfortunately it's the laser most of the time. That's why it is generally advised to over-use the drives so that the warranty will last if a drive is faulty.
