Actualy no, I am recalling this from the Quake 1 days. Carmack was working on a Direct3D quake, but after putting some work into it, realized that its not worth it. Bear in mind there were no opengl cards at the time, ALL of them, except 3dfx, were Direct3D only, which is a huge reason to want to only stay with Direct3D, but still, he didn't like it.

To this day he still believes the same, and stays away from Direct3D.
