I need filtering help on Photoshop 7!

How do you use the filter mode when it won't access it? The text of all the filtering for textures etc. won't let me click on them, is there a mode you have to be on to acitvate them? Please help, I want to make real cool textures.

what mode is your images at? I dont think grayscale is compatible with all the filters.

Or maybe the layer image is hidden. Be more specific. I use photoshop cs2 9 so mine might be a bit different.
