A possibility is if the compiler isn't aware as to what "uint64" is since it is not a "native" type (int, char, float, etc)

it needed to be extern uint64 (timestampbase);

not extern uint64 timestampbase;

I don't think that fix is correct. I am not sure how MS compilers will understand that, but that's an old pre-ansi style function declaration, whereas without the parentheses it's an external variable definition.
