I have never had a single pop up when visiting this forum, and that is with pop up stopper disabled as well.

I think you should scan your system with Ad-Aware you probably have something like Transponder or Gator on your computer. Both of those are known to put ads on pages that don't have ads....

We do have popups, but they are spread across the whole network. If you visit www.emu64.com and get a popup there, you won't see one here. Depending on how much money it bring in, I'll increase or decrease the time-out for it. I don't see how anyone can complain about a single popup across a network as big as ours. If you only visit EmuTalk, then well...tough luck. :P

I could disable them from EmuTalk, but as I don't bring in revenue enough as it is to cover for the server, that's not an option right now. But that might change, we'll see.

I tend to visit a lot of sites throughout the network and have never noticed pop ups - so I don't think it's a problem at all.

I hardly see pop-ups at all at the moment :)

It may be a problem with the settings of the cookies...
I had the same problem... Sometimes up to ten or more. And one new appeared everytime I came back on the main page of emutalk... No more now. Try to set the security level of the cookies one step below.

umm, where'd the banner go?

Allnatural

I don't have a problem with a few pop-ups, but on some visits to Emutalk I will literally get a pop-up every time I switch pages. It's not happening at the moment, but it was earlier today.

And no it's not Gator or some other spyware.:sly:

Just a suggestion, as a while back I had transponder covertly installed on my system, and was getting besieged with pop ups from all sites. I think when I got a porn one from Google was the time I got suspicious though :D

This is evidently of big interest of our visitors, so I'll try to explain how it works (as briefly as I can :P) and try to answer your questions.

zorbid: That's exactly it. Our ad server uses a PHP script written by our server admin Stuart. The first time you visit one of the sites in the Emulation64 network, the ad server will place a cookie in your computer and a popup will appear. The next time you visit one of our sites the ad server will check that cookie for some information:

- If it has been more than X hours, a popup will show.
- If it has been less than X hours, a popup will not show.
- X varies, and it's depended on if the ad companies we work with have popup campaigns running. Either way, you will never see a popup twice for several hours.

We've used this script for several months now. If people experience problems, it's their setup that's wrong, ie. your security is set too high (cookies not allowed).

Malcolm: Just like with the popups, there's not always campaigns running, or the server of the ad company is down. The latter when no banner at all is shown. Otherwise we'll show a non-paid "default banner".

Allnatural: try deleting the user@adserver.emulation64.com cookies, don't know if this helps but at least you'll get a fresh cookie that the server can work with. :)

Trotterwatch: Yeah well, people don't think that these things exist but they do. :)

---

Cool to hear your opinions, but to remove all popups is something that I fear won't be possible just yet. Of course I'm hoping that I'll be able to sometime. Popups have replaced regular banners, as these (reg. banners) hardly pay anything anymore and people have learnt not to click them. We have to (and I'm not exaggerating) display tens of thousands of banners just to make one single dollar. Using popups is the only way to (partially) pay for the server.

If you want to donate, paypal martin@emulation64.com a little something and it will be greatly appreciated. A couple of truly amazing people, and real good friends have donated already and I will never forget the help from them. I kiss you. :D

I want to get rid of advertising too, of course, but I'm a student and I've put in close to one thousand dollars from my own pockets just to keep the machine running until now (and domain fees etc.).

Good thing is that advertising is finally starting to pay off (one ad firm still owe me $250 though, money that I'll never get). Right now it pretty much evens out (I hope). Well, I thought I'd let you know. :)

Ain't there a problem with "third party" cookies? (spelling?). In Ie6, you can choose to refuse them. Won't a cookie from emulation64.com be considered as third party when you are browsing emutalk?

EDIT: I think most people won't even notice/care if you use a different cookie for emutalk. And it's more cash for you ;).

i didn't even read what you guys wrote but the pop-ups are very annoying, and wish getting banner clicks could be resolved by some other means;)

You should have, the solution is there. :)

Remote: We're paid by impression, not clicks. Same for banners.

zorbid: Yes, it's third party cookies. That's why you should have your browser accept all cookies, otherwise the server isn't able to write a cookie on your machine, which will mean that you're getting popups all the time.

pj64er: Heh, problems? No banners = no problem. :D

Josep: Respectless. :hrm:. If you want to discuss this matter you should at least read what the rest of us has to say, before complaining.

BTW, noone has donated yet. So, I suppose the donation system wouldn't work. :P

Why don't you make a special cookie for emutalk? I prefer to filter third partiy cookies (= most of the time cookie coming from an ad server).

I correct myself, we're not using third party cookies. We've got a written certificate.

Tri-Force: Seriously, check for spyware. I've never seen that kind of popup.

I get a pop-up once or twice per day, doesn't really bother me at all.... I was refering to Slougi's post, of course that could be his opinion... and in the end I guess I don't mind you promoting emutalk as long as say what you are doing.

The Gent's post is a exellent example,

Once again, the only one who can fix that problem is you. If our server aren't allowed to write a cookie to your computer, you'll get a ton of popups.
