Actually neither zip or rar are really meant for media files. Picture files are compressed generally by their format ( jpeg, bmp, png ). Same for video files , except with avi, codecs determine the compression.
read about it here: http://www.winzip.com/xgifcomp.htm
__________________
I compressed a 14.8mb folder full of pics and mov video files with zip and rar to determine the difference.

Zip: 10.5mb
Rar: 10.1mb
The main reason it was able to compress as much as it did is because there are duplicate files and only minor differences between each file.

Here's another test with completely different files ( no duplicates, no similarities ) totaling @ 17.3mb.
Zip:16.9
Rar:16.9

Anyone downloaded a file with a .7z extension? I downloaded the Mario Kart 64 rom ( no , I'm not posting the site ) in that format. Compressed it was about 10mb, uncompressed it was 300+ mb. It had every known dump of the game! It compressed so well because the differences between each file where minor , and although the game(s) have media files in them (sounds, textures) , it is mostly code.

Don't get me wrong, I have winrar. But I remember when I didn't, and I hated .rar because of that ( dial-upper back then ). :bouncy:

i have winrar, and i really dont like using it that much. mostly because of a simple convenience: winzip opens the file directory it uncompressed to. with winrar, i have to search for where i put it, which i have to specify each time unless i want it stored in the temporary internet files folder, which i clean out a lot...

.7z files, since they re-write everything in code like u said, nin_10_dough, should be able to compress everything much easier. i guess if written in code, mario kart might be able to be compressed that much, idk.

id rather have it in zip than rar, but thats just me... and mp3 e o... and probably a few others...

March 26th, 2005, 03:11
I have winrar integrated into Windows, all I have to do is right click and hit "extract here." About .7z, I meant the rom image is mostly code. It was still able to compress so well because the majority of the 300mb+ files was duplicate code.

Nice work _pm_ , but you forgot about the double outline ( you got one of them , but forgot the white ). I knew something seemed different about them, but had to run the game to see.

MP3 e o , I like your icons even though they are different from the original ones. They look more like the ingame platfroms than the real icons do.

Getting back to .7z format, is it feasible to compress files that I have using Winzip/Winrar (into .7z)? I like this type of compression, mostly because how it can make an insanely huge file into less than 1/10th of its original size. Any feedback is appreciated. As I said before, how can I do this w/Winzip?

MP3 e o
March 26th, 2005, 03:35
can you compress a compressed file of a different format?

_pm_
March 26th, 2005, 03:35
Ok... lets see...I'd really really appreciate it if you stoped using .rar files,I'd say only about 1/4 the people that own computers with an n64 emulator actually have a program that will let them archive .rar files, so please everybody,if your going to put any files on the forum please make them zips. :plain: thanx
Sorry, but that won't happen :plain:

No offense, but I think your discussion is really out of place here. If you're using texture packs is because you're using Rice's plugin, and guess what... Rice uploads his plugins in RAR format!! So, following your "theory", only 1/4 people that owns computers with a n64 emu are using Rice's plugin. So why don't you convince him to upload zips instead of rars before complaining here? :)

Also, I think that the file format preference should be discussed in another thread, it's off-topic in this thread, so my discussion ends here.

Great work _PM_ you're doing a great job, can't wait for the next .rar of your work :)
Thx for your comments Trotterwatch, the next RAR will come soon :)

To compress with 7zip you need the 7zip application:

http://www.7-zip.org/

BTW: Newer versions of WinRAR support decompression of 7zip.

You need to go to your plugin folder, right click and create a folder named hires_texture, then go into that folder and create another folder called SMASH BROTHERS and then put the files into the folder(if it doesnt work you might want to change the hires_texture folder name to hires texture, but im not sure and im to lazy to look, but try hires_texture first)
i hope this helps  :sombrero:

ps: dont forget to turn on search for hires textures

You have to have rices plugin 6.1.1 (perferably Beta 8) as your main plugin. go to video settings, and i think the tab is called textures(you might have to look) look for the "load hi res textures" and check the box. Oh and the textures won't work if you didn't archive the .rar files and get all of the textures and put them into Smash Brothers and it'll all work out. :D

Two solutions to the white border:

1. Color the white background of your texture something that resembles the object more (like the same kind of brown)

or

2. Make the alpha channel 1-bit. That is, no blurring on the edges. And make sure that none of the white alpha pixels are on the whiteness of the texture background.

I'm retexturing the bonus texts now, trying to remake the original font (the m needs some tweaking). It's pretty hard working with them, since every Bonus Name is a texture, so I need to get the Bonus in the game only to dump the texture I want to replace :(

However, I had a lot of progress in finding those textures. :bouncy: The text file includes a list of all the bonuses I've found at this moment. If someone knows about the existance of other bonuses not included on the list, please let me know.

Also, I noticed that the font used in the Stages Names in the Stage Selection screen is the same than the Bonus font, so I started remaking all of them too with my new fonts (third screenshot) :)

I think the problem is the actual alphaness of the image. I don't know if it can handle alpha blending. I'm going to try out myself, where to put this file, and recheck later.

In the time being, enjoy this Classic Mushroom Kingdom pack. It's not a big deal, I only pixel-resized most of it. Only the cloud I put in more effort. It's not complete, but I will update it later if I have the time.

I also uploaded it on my own server, since I don't trust attachments.

Thanks, maybe it's not a big deal for you, but is perfect for me :)
What I mean, I was also thinking about pixel-resizing the Mushroom Kingdom textures. Personally, I don't think that improving the blocks would be a great idea, the original textures were designed to look like the original Super Mario Bros for the NES.
Btw, can I add them to the texture pack? If yes, I'll specify in the README that you did them. :)

optimus, I think GaryCXJk is right, it looks that the game forces the alpha channel to 1-bit for this particular texture. Anyways, I modified the alpha channel to remove the white lines.

Well, finally I decided to dump all the stages backgrounds as I did with Hyrule Castle some weeks ago.
For all those people interested in remaking them, the link below includes the textures I dumped for now.
Remember, this is a texture dump, not hires textures.

Download SSB backgrounds texture dump (http://hires.emutalk.net/supersmashbros/SSB_Backgrounds_DUMP.rar) (1315kb)

Some quick notes about them:

1) A Background in SSB isn't a simple texture. It's made of vertically-tiled textures (37 for Training Mode, 44 for Characters Stages).
2) 4X textures won't work properly in DirectX due to a 1024 pixel width limitation in the plugin. So I recommend using either OpenGL or 2X/3X textures to test your backgrounds.
3) Some backgrounds (like Mushroom Kingdom) use the same texture several times, so trying to replace them with a totally different one is not a good idea.
4) The dumps include only the characters stages and training mode backgrounds (Bonuses, Metal Mario, etc. not included).
5) I've already made training mode backgrounds. They will be available in the next pack.
6) Training Mode Backgrounds are not the same size than Character Stages Backgrounds.
7) I added leading numbers to the textures filenames, so you don't need to worry about which texture goes where. But don't forget to remove them before testing your backgrounds.

Also, considering that the stages pictures at the stage selection screen are just resized versions of the backgrounds themselves, I remade them, and corrected the Hyrule thumbnail I did before to add the lines it was missing.
The attachment includes all of them. These are hires textures. Put them anywhere in the SSB hires texture folder.

Great work, Optimus!
Too bad that some of your new textures are causing severe slowdowns here (first screenshot). :(
It looks like the conflicting textures are 445E0667 and 4BD50EC4. Removing them solves this problem.
The same happens with my Yoshi icons and with GaryCXJk's Yoshi textures (in Yoshi's Stage), in which the same texture is being applied on different places, with different palettes, at the same time.
If that's the case, I don't think there's anything you can do about it. And it doesn't matter if they are ci or ci_byrgba, they will be slow anyways. I wonder if somebody else has these slowdowns.

About the alpha channel, I don't think the problem is with Photoshop. It looks like the game automatically forces the alpha channel to 1-bit for those textures.
If that's right, the only thing you can do to avoid those odd borders is to make sure your resulting image will have 0% (transparent) and 100% (opaque) alpha only.

Well, continuing with the Stages textures, I was working on Peach's Castle these days.

The only missing texture in this stage is the bumper.

Hmmm, if the big slowdown is only on Zebes Stage, try removing the textures starting with:
SMASH BROTHERS#4BD50EC4...
SMASH BROTHERS#445E0667...
SMASH BROTHERS#8819C8E6...
SMASH BROTHERS#A8EE7A96...
(in Stages/Planet Zebes folder)
And please report if that helped or not. If the slowdown is gone after deleting these files, the problem is probably the same than with the new textures. I hope Rice can fix/optimize/hack this someday.

I also found item pics and some closeup character pics.
Use them wisely.
Thanks for the artwork, although I already have all the items, except for that Pokéball, I didn't have too much luck looking for a decent one, so thanks for providing it, I'll improve the PokéBall for the next release. And I think the StarRod can be improved too. :)

I didn't finish with all its textures yet. But if you want to give them a try, download and extract the file below in the game folder (EDIT: Now available since 0.31). Although they're working fine here, please report if they cause big slowdowns on your comps.
Some textures are in Master Hand too.

Confirmed, the slowdowns are definitely those textures fault. It's a shame...let's hope Rice fixes it. I'm glad to see the lava is not one of those, i love that lava! :)

Awesome work!! Although it should be acid :D (remember the 'Acid Clear' bonus?)
Well, back to the textures slowdown problems, I don't think that using the regular ci's instead of the rgba would be much help, Kyo reported that the slowdowns were in 0.30 too (btw, thanks Kyo for the report!).

Yes, those white pixels are really annoying. Btw, I was working on the MotionSensor Bomb today, and came into the same problem.

Anyways, I managed to remove almost every odd pixel applying an erode filter on the alpha channel (Don't expect smooth edges). But I think a better idea is to manually edit the alpha, or find another way to remove them.

AFAIK, there are no restrictions about where to put the rom.

i also have another question, i get Rice 6.0, but it doesnt show up in the plugins selection, why?
1) Make sure that the plugin is in the plugin folder (inside the main emu folder by default).
2) You need to put the BMLib* files in the emu folder.
Btw, remember that you need 6.1.1beta10 for the SSB texture pack.

EDIT:maybe when it's stretched?

Yes, I'd say that the background image is not stretched, but shrunk. Since the white is only 1px wide when it shrinks it disapears.

Are you using a white matte when you save these? Using a transparent matte might resolve the problem.

Okay, did my try at the SMASH logo. Failed miserably.

http://www.multiverseworks.com/SmashSupLook.png (http://www.multiverseworks.com/Smash.zip)

That's how it supposed to look.

In case you didn't noticed, the image is also a hyperlink, if you haven't figured it out, go here:

http://www.multiverseworks.com/Smash.zip

Okay, now, to make it actually work WELL, there's something you need to know. The logo, along with some other graphics, uses overlapping, meaning there is at least one pixel which gets overlapped by the top / bottom graphics.

As an example here's a text:

I eat ba

bies

If the two pieces of text were to be combined with overlapping, this would happen:

I eat bbies

What happened to the a? It got overlapped by the b of bies. So how to solve this?

I eat ba

abies

This sentence will turn into this:

I eat babies

_pm_
April 13th, 2005, 18:30
Yes, many tiled images use overlapping, including the big texts and the characters pictures in the character selection screen.

About the title, I think you could take it from the original case, and try to enhance or vectorize it. I was planning to redo the title, but I'm busy studying now, so if you want to help, you're welcome. If you want to give it a try, the image below is a portion of the original case (not a texture), it may be some help :) I think I'm going to work on the copyright text on the title screen.

Those aren't texture bugs. It looks like you have "Fine texture mapping" enabled.
Texture aligning is not perfect for tiled images, for example, you may (or may not) notice a "missing" line in the "Go!" text.
Enabling fine texture mapping helps sometimes, but it causes alignment bugs in other areas, and it also adds a strange effect to scrolling backgrounds (when scrolling).
I highly recommend you disable it.

Kolano

Do you mean "Accurate Texture Mapping" _PM_? I have that enabled too, as I figured I'd go with acuracy.

I found this expaination in Rice's 5.0.0 release readme...

" A new option - Fine texture mapping - to give better texture mapping coordinates"

"- Texture mapping coordinates computation. Texture mapping is more accurate,
block thin lines are almost gone, and text fonts are cleaner for most games"

I'm not sure if Rice patrols these threads, but could he or someone in the know provide an explaination of that option?

Yes, I think it goes for accuracy, but for some reason when you enable "Fine texture mapping", some textures are not aligned properly in SSB.
For example, take a look at the pics below. The first has "Fine texture mapping" enabled, and the second doesn't. I disabled hi-res textures for convenience.
I left "Accurate texture mapping" enabled (btw, which is the relation between them?)

Hmmm, I'll take a look at the updates and see if I can organize them better. After that, I'll probably delete my old attachments to avoid confusion.

Btw, it won't be possible to include all of them in a single file, some textures are alternatives and others cause severe slowdowns on some computers due (probably) to a plugin bug. Anyways, some are working fine for some people so I think I'll put them as alternative links on the first page to make it justice. But no, they won't be available in the main texture pack for now.

Thanks for the suggestion. :)

EDIT: All the updates from the last five pages are available in 0.31 now. You don't actually need to install 0.31 if you downloaded those upgrades before.

As I mentioned before, I removed the old attachments from page 20 to 24. Optimus, Mojo Man and peoman69, sorry to annoy, but I think it would be nice if you do the same, so this gets a bit more organized (but please check if all your work is included in 0.31 or in the alternative texture packs section in page 1, any comments, please PM me). Thanks.

More upgrades will come soon :)

The second.

In other words, you need to do the following:
1) Extract 0.30 in the plugin folder
2) After that, extract 0.31 in the plugin folder too. When/if you're asked about overwriting the files, choose 'Yes to all'.

I'm pretty sure those ci textures never change their palette, so you can safely rename them to allciByRGBA (e.g. SMASH BROTHERS#F27886DB#2#0_allciByRGBA.png).
Go to the 6.1.1 beta thread at: http://www.emutalk.net/showthread.php?t=26442 for more information about ci textures.

If you want to use the allciByRGBA method, don't forget to remove the second CRC from the filename, for example:
SMASH BROTHERS#DF2A07F6#2#0#00A43420_ciByRGBA. png
should be renamed to:
SMASH BROTHERS#DF2A07F6#2#0_allciByRGBA.png

EDIT: Forget what I mentioned before, the actual problem is that you accidentally set the extension to .png.png. Just rename your files to .png, and they should work fine (if you see "xxxxx.png" in explorer, just remove the ".png").

I am still trying figuring out a bit how this works and stuff but.....

I GOT AN IDEA!!

Link's nose always gaved me a feeling it just was ''glued'' on his face and it really looks like a Michael Jackson nose ,because of the line around his nose.... So isn't the solution to this just to get rid of that line and give it his natural skin colour?

Mollymutt
June 25th, 2005, 05:11
I don't think that is possible without editing the actual model, and then loading it back in the game. We don't have the ability to do this yet, or you would've seen a totally remodeled Link already.

yeah, that sounds kind of reasonable.......
but, if you look closely at the texture at the sides of the nose you can see that the line around his nose is darker and doesn't match with his skin colour and that gives it the weird nose look....

Well, I've been retexturing some of the characters. Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, and Pikachu are the ones I'm (sort of) done with. Now for the bugs:

- Mario's regular and Jumpman suits work fine, but his Wario and "chocolate" suits are discolored around the collar and at the front of the cap. Luigi doesn't have this problem.

- Luigi's cap doesn't use my retexture. That will be fixed later.

Update: Fox and Jiggly are done. I've fixed a few problems with the textures; Pika's eyes should show up correctly, and the Mario Bros. no longer have that darker flesh tone around their eyes.

I'm attaching what I have done, so far. Just extract it to the "...\hires_texture\SMASH BROTHERS" directory, and everything should be fine. Any feedback is appreciated. I plan on retexturing Ness and DK next. I also plan to retexture the electrocution skeleton textures of these characters.

I'd hate to double post, but I've been working on the Pokemon sprite textures. I've still got to tidy them up (remove the dark edges, for one), so I won't upload them until they are done. Until then, here's a preview:

Alright, here's the updated Pokemon textures. The only Pokemon that I didn't retexture were Starmie and Pokemon that fly around in the Saffron City background. The edges of the Pokemon don't appear as rough as they do in the collage that I posted earlier. I can't post some new screens at the moment, but I will later.

Once again, just extract the RAR to the "...\hires_texture\SMASH BROTHERS" directory, and everything should be fine. Any feedback is appreciated.

Would you ask someone to go run 20km for you? Well essentially asking for a complete texture pack is something like that. Although it seems like a 'trivial task' it's not. Heck I don't have any of the hirez textures working yet in my experiments. It's a bit unrealistic to ask for something that takes hundreds of hours of work... and expect it to be all done suddenly.

I'm sure you can appreciate the fact people do this as a hobby not as a job and they do have things like reality that interfere.

Of the texture packs that are 'complete' I'm fairly positive they aren't 100% complete. Such things are realitive I suppose. In any case ease up on what you expect from texture packs, also you can help my contributing to there improvement yourself.

What they (and I) were referring to were the people who have downloaded all of these already and are using them all at the same time. Then it would be a trivial task because it's just be zipping up the folder and uploading it. They weren't asking for someone to make the pack, they were asking to package it.

Mr. SnippyWell maybe they will, or maybe they'll drop the project all together. Who knows huh?
As far as I can tell though ... most of the hirez texture projects are a bit on hold. I messed with them for a bit, and even with a texture picking tool it's not particularly easy to set up. Packaging them all together and having them unzip to a particular hires_texture\<game folder> might be helpful I'm certain. However if you do have some of it working and you have most of the hirez textures, you could package it too. :)

I've encountered a problem when i came to a scene with lots of same images appearing at the same time. :( For example, in the character-select screen, it's OK i choose 4 different characters. But if i choose 4 Yoshis, the emulator(PJ64) will become very slow. The same occurs in the Planet Zebes stage when the lava (which is made up of many same textures, i think) goes up and in Yoshi Island where i have to fight against 3 Yoshis at the same time in 1P mode (there are lots of Yoshi heads on the top-left corner too).

That means if there are many same or similar textures appearing on the screen, the game will become unimaginably slow.

Is there any options in Rice Video 6.1.1 beta10 that can get rid of this problem? or just higher specs required? and I don't think p4 2.8 fx5500 512ram is high enough.

At the expense of sounding like a jerk, I've gotta say... with all of the downloads my re-upload got, I'm surprised that nobody was competent enough to just re-re-upload it themselves. After all, it doesn't hurt to take the initiative every now and then. Then again, I guess I could be blamed for uploading it to a temporary 30-day host.

Nonetheless, I've reuploaded it to MegaUpload this time, so that it doesn't expire so quickly (like the old MyTempDir link). You can download it here (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=6V5LMMG6).

Hello everybody, I've been using Project 64 for a number of years now, and I just recently found this site and read about the high-res SSB textures.

I read through every page of this thread, and it would seem that this project has died off for the most part, especially since the original download links don't work.

I downloaded the textures you put up 1337BHLMRO, but only about half of them work. I think it may be due to this error I am receiving when I go to Options > Settings:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v137/Innocent_Hawk/error.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v137/Innocent_Hawk/error2.jpg

If anybody can tell me how to fix this error and get the rest of the textures working I will be forever grateful, and I will consider picking up where this project left off. I have many years of experience modifying computer games, and this seems like it would be a fun project to tackle.

mudlord

Innocent Hawk: The debugger plugin shouldn't really be used for playing games in general...Its more like a development tool. Basically, if you have no use for the debugger, you can remove the DLL :). Or in future, untick it from the installer.

Ma Chao
August 16th, 2007, 22:52
And maybe "only half of them works" because they didn't retexture everything yet. As you can see, this project died on v0.31. I also noticed some textures didn't show up if you let "Try to use smaller texture" option disabled (_pm_'s post on the first page suggests to leave it enabled). That, at least, with Rice Video 6.1.1 beta10, I haven't tryed mudlord's build yet.

Innocent Hawk
August 17th, 2007, 06:12
I had mudlord's build first. I use beta10 now, and I no longer have any error messages, but still only half of them work (like Hyrule Castle, which we know has been completed and included).

Where do you find the "Try to use smaller texture" option and "Alternative texture size calculation"? I can't find them anywhere...

Ma Chao
August 17th, 2007, 18:54
At Rice Video config, go to Current Game Options and look for it there. Check _pm_'s post to see if the other options are as he suggested. Textures like Hyrule Castle's walls and floor, and Planet Zebes' Lava with now work.

edit: No luck, got a few goodies, but nothing worth uploading.

But, i have a list of things i would love to track down:
1. That underwater version of yoshi's level which had a screenshot on page 12 (I think, its something from pages 10-20 in any case)
2. I saw a picture of Hyrule castle that had red textures for the roof instead of green SOMEWHERE on these forums, i would love to find it again.
3. In another thread here, i believe it is gecko's remix of SSB thread, there was an image of kirby's level but with a winter theme, snow all over the place. That would be nice to play on, i might pm him or something.
4. The texture pack that contains the remixed hyrule castle background.
