What's new

XP or 2K

HTAFC will rise again!!!
I came up with the brilliant idea of formatting my HD today. All so I could duel boot and have 95 (used for old dos games) and XP. Previously I had been using 2K but I thought since I’m doing this I may as well use XP when I reinstall.

I would be using a cracked version of XP but I’ve read that the final version of SP1 for XP will have ‘Special Features’ meaning dodgy versions won’t work.

Another factor is that I have seen people on this board saying that the Firestorm Duel Force Pad doesn’t rumble on N64 emus in XP. Is this True?

Should I stick with 2K? - I’m thinking that way at the moment.

A hundred people here will tell you to use XP (morality issue notwithstanding). A handful will tell you to stick with 2k. I'm part of the handful.

2k all the way.^_^

:ermm:I don't know but is it possible to triple boot with 95, XP, and 2000? If you can, that way you could see if 2000 or xp will work for you better.:D

Why? You can do this but you really only need 1 linux, 1 9x kernel, and 1 NT kernel, and most dont need that many. I suppose you could do it to test them, but thats a lot of trouble for very little accomplishment.

Im having difficult enough time getting this to work as it is, don't scare me!!

Another question does anyone know how to get the ASUS V6800 Geforce 256 working in win 95? I have downloaded the drivers but i get an error message when trying to install them.

"Setup was unable to locate a detected devices PCI ID in NVIDS.CFG.
The installation will now be terminated."

Ummm don't use WinXP.. unless you enjoy being spyed on. Furthermore all security etc on your machine is mostly dependant on microsofts computer systems (on the internet). Don't forget if you change your video card you might need to get a new license as well. I like Win2K it's not great and is easy to kill with some skill but it seems to work OK.

About the error

Your error is likely due to the fact that either you have an AGP card or that the card you have isn't in the NVIDS.CFG file. My guess is it could be both. I don't think AGP was around when windows 95 was made (gee.. can you say.. non forward thinking?).

It's looking for the configuration information for your card basically :)

I don't think AGP was around when windows 95 was made

That was what i thought the problem could be.

The site i downloaded the driver from clearly stated a number of cards it supported and the Geforce 256 was one of the, it also said that the driver was for Win 95/98/ME.

So can windows 95 use AGP or what???

Found this on the net...

you must be running at least Win95 OSR2.1 (950B), the AGP support softwares were added along with USB support in OSR2.1

...so i must add, i am using 95b

stick with win2k:cool:

I am sticking with 2000 now but...

I also want 95 for dos games (sam n max, day of the testical)

I supose my answer would be to duel boot with 98 and 2000 if 95 does not support AGP!

XP is more compatible with 9x software than 2k, though there are a few exceptions to the rule. As for DOS, well, thats just the opposite, neither are very compatible there. XP is better for compatibility all around though. Its a lot faster and probably more of what your looking for.

I've got it working now, it was just as much a task to see if i could do it as anythiing else.

One last thing though...

When my comp boots up and it goes to the operating selection screen i can choose between "Windows 2000 Profesional edition"
or "Microsoft Windows". Is it possible to change the caption of the second choce (which is win 95)?

Thanks for everyones input! :)

Look in the boot.ini, in the root of your boot drive. There will be a reference to "Microsoft Windows" in there, something like this:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows"

Change it to say whatever you want (the part in quotes).:)

Right click my computer, click properties, click advanced, click startup and recovery settings, click edit. This basically opens the Boot.ini for you so you dont have to look for it and open it yourself. If you know where to go its faster to do it this way, not much though.

I knew about right clicking my comp>Advanced>Start up and recovering but i didn't seem to be able to do anything there!

There is no edit button..

also ive searched my HD for a boot.ini and there isn't one.

Ive attatched an image...

What are you basing this off of?

I know this much, when I look at the nt compatibility database, windows 2000 has a much higher compatibility rate than XP.

Your compatibility database is probably based off of pure XP. They dont account for compatibility modes. In 2k compatibility modes dont work, well they might but not as effectively as XP, I know cause I've tried them.

I'd bet if they tried with compatibility modes, you could get all the games 2000 will run to work and then some.

eagle: 2K has the same compatibility modes that XP has, and yes they do whatever is necessary to make the program, hardware, game, or what have you, work in that OS, including turning on the compatibility modes, or in the case of old old DOS games, running dos sound emulators. If you go look, even some of microsofts own 9X games that don't run in XP will actualy run in 2K, compatibility modes and all tested.

www.ntcompatible.com

But my question to you still remains, what are you basing your previous statement about compatibility off of?

No they dont have the same compatibility modes, 2k was the first expirament with them, they were greatly improved by the time XP came out. It only makes sense after all, look at the edit button they added to the startup properties. They added improvements to compatibility modes too. And your website there isnt working, besides, I dont trust the word of this one website anyway.
