Will Vista work with your game collection?

(sarcasm)It's great to see that MS grasps the concept of backwards compatibility.(/sarcasm)

I swear, I'm starting to think that I'm going to avoid Vista like the plague.

I have XP. It runs fine, it runs everything I want.

The last thing I want to have to do is going through my entire collection of not just games, but other useful software too, to find out what I'm more or less going to have to toss out because MS is too lazy to support older stuff.

And considering how bloated Vista is going to be, finding a way to support Win98 and DOS shouldn't be that big of a freakin deal.

I think most people will not upgrade to vista, it will most likely be when they get a new PC it will be installed and so they will just use it then.

I use XP Pro at the moment, Why, because it came on the laptop. I am just as happy as running win2k as XP

Whenever Vista is release, then we can know for sure. My guess is some of the game will and some won't (without a patch anyway). BTW JKKDARK, looking at your signature, I thought I went to the "wrong" site :D

That list is stupid, Vista isn't even finished yet... a whole lot can change with a year or so more development which it has. It's impressive anything works at all in its beta form. XP wasn't that great when it first came out either. Lets see, i'll go half bake a cake and expect it to be the same as if it was baked.

Well that's true, and from reviews I know that Vista builds after BETA2 are getting a little better.

Meh...
People are too much in a hurry. Just wait until Vista's retail build actually comes out. I'm not expecting anything revolutionary.. even with the aero glass, and DX10. I'm happy with DX 9.0c for the moment. It won't be for another year after it's been released that DX10 will start to be really in more games.

But would such a development, where any pre-Win2k stuff no longer works, surprise anybody in the least?

It already basically happened with DOS.

There are already games out there for Win98 that will not run on 2k or XP.

It's only going to get worse. Which really sucks, because there's alot of great games out there for DOS and older Windows OSs.

Actually I think it would suprise because Vista is built off an incredibly similar core to XP. Where-as Windows XP is almost nothing like Windows 98, granted Dos applications don't work anymore but I doubt support for windows applications will deminish with Vista. XP's support of previous windows games is very impressive considering only one of my games (turok 2) that I had for windows 98 won't work and I have a fairly large game collection. Vista is still very much an incomplete piece of software and people are expecting too much from it.

As for compatibility, if you really have THAT many games that won't play, one word for you: Multi-boot.

I'd rather wait till Vista is complete before I pass judgement on it like so many others seem to have been doing. I mean come on, XP was absolutely dreaded as well if I recall and people nowadays would defend it like it was their very life force.

I agree with you Scott, but it's sorta sad to see that BF2 and HL2 doesn't work fully. :( Oh well, if Counter-Strike 1.6 works fine, I'm ok with it. :)
