Personally, I think Xvid has the better quality, but Divx5 could be better :p

You can't really say which has higher quality, since it depends on hard you compress the movie/clip. I usually capture my video at 900 kilobit/sec (DivX), but if I increased it to say 1500 kilobit/sec the quality would be better, but of course, the file size would also increase.

If we're talking about which has better quality of two raw AVI clips converted to DivX AVI and Xvid AVI with the same file sizes I suppose they're somewhat similar :), but the good old DivX fanatics would of course disagree. >_<

I prey, not pray.
I have no idea myself, but I would prefer xvid since its entirely GPL, and therefore it can be moved to any platform and converted to any other format.

This is the same topic for a question I was about to post: I rarely ever play with any video related stuff, but I have an mpeg-2 clip that I want to convert to xvid. I don't want to sacrifice any noticeable visual quality in doing this, I just want to reduce the filesize, how do you tell what bitrate and other settings to pick when doing this?

I once saw a comparison, don't remember where. They couldn't really say which one was better, as both had their strengths. And that was at least a dozen XviD builds ago.

Go for XviD. Quality is great and as AlphaWolf said, it's GPL. Plus it's rather widely used in the dvd-ripping scene already

As for alpha's question, you should find some help by looking for "xvid encoding tutorial" in google. Or maybe not...

1. Download and install the latest version of VirtualDub
2. Download and install Koepi's Xvid Codec
3. Download and install Lame MP3 codec
4. Open VirtualDub and choose "open video file". Pick your mpeg-2 file.
5. Select "full processing mode" from the video tab.
6. Click "compression" from the video tab, and select "Xvid MPEG-4 Codec". Click configure. Set the encoding mode to "1 pass - CBR" and the bitrate to 900.
7. Select "full processing mode" from the audio tab.
8. Click "compression" from the audio tab, and select "Lame MP3". Pick the 128 kbps one.
9. Finally, click "save as AVI" from the file tab, and pick a suiting name for your new file.

Note: Doing this, I just reduced a 203 MB mpeg to a 151 MB AVI. No noticeable change in quality. Good luck.

:)

Err...not sure AW. I've always used CBR and it's working nicely. But I suppose if you use CBR you might be able to make even smaller file sizes, not sure. But if you use CBR it's very easy to calculate file sizes before encoding. :)
