What's the Deal with UHLE?

Honestly. I don't get it. The original UHLE authors proved that n64 emulation was a reality. They did a lot of good work. I'm impressed and all that. Honestly, however, I must say that I find 1964 and Pj64 much more impresssive. These guys have stayed with it, and programmed some (expletive deleted) impressive (expletive deleted). They've put YEARS into it, and created emulators that will run incredible things (reference the new tr64 .74 beta plugin) and do it so well it's better than being in front of a TV.
So WHY on EARTH is everyone so in fricking awe of UHLE, and the people who say they are going to start programming on that source again?

So WHY on EARTH is everyone so in fricking awe of UHLE, and the people who say they are going to start programming on that source again?

I think there are a few simple points to answer that question. ;)

1. Nostalgia - UltraHLE was the first n64 emulator and many people have fond memories of it. Seeing it running new games or on our current pc's (without the use of a glide wrapper) would bring back and enhance those memories.

2. Speed - UltraHLE is without a doubt the fastest (ok corn was up there, maybe even faster :p) n64 emulator and runs well on low end pc's. Some people dont have megabucks to spend on PC hardware but still want a taste of n64 emulation. UltraHLE is the only way to do this as it uses High Level Emulation.

3. A Challenge - I guess the only reason they are working on the source again is because they want to challenge themselves as coders and to see how much compatibility they really can get out of using High Level Emulation methods.

As you said PJ64 and 1964 are far superior emulators in compatibilty and overall complexity althought it will be interesting to see how close a pure HLE implementation can get to that of its LLE counterparts.

Just sit back, dont complain, ignore the 'in awe' newbs and enjoy running Resident Evil 2 at 300fps when UltraHLE 2.0 comes out ;)

Ok, I guess I can see the nostalgia. I have fond memorys of UltraHLE and corn, and I enjoyed running mario on those emulators. I guess I just don't feel like they will be doing something that hasn't been done before. Sure, HLE instead of LLE, but big deal. Both get the job done, and if they know so much, they might try to make the two I mentioned even better, instead of taking attention away from some emulators that have proved they have staying power, and the programmers know what they are doing.

As to speed, Sure. Fine, I'll give you that.

Challenge: Sorry, someone else already did it. if you know of a better way to do it, help make a great emulator perfect, instead of going to a great deal of trouble, and a very long process (it's taken YEARS to get 1964 and pj64 to where they are.) just to re-do what we already have.

I guess after all this harshing, I'm going to relent a bit, and say that I applaud the guys who want to do UHLE. It's a good emu (I don't feel like it deserves to be the #1 emulator in some polls) but it was decent in it's day, and maybe that'll come again.

?????????????????????????
I don't see wtf it has to do with 1964? :plain2:
Well, anyway, first:

The authors are not trying to steal the fame from each other! They are doing it mostly for experience and because they enjoy it. They wanna make uhle 2.0 to expand their knowledge and skills with the hle method. Not for stealing the fame from pj and 1964.

And as for why no one is actually continuing them? Well, 1964 is being developed by their own authors who are very skilled both of them. And pj...well, it's progress has halted, and there is, atm no source for the 1.5 version out. So no one can continue it.

But as i said, the uhle 2.0 team wish to expand the hle method, not working with lle, and thus making 1964 or pj better.

Quite right, and I would love to be able to move this to the general discussion forum, as this isn't really about UHLE. It's more about why an emu that (was) so old and discontinued is so popular. That just doesn't make sense to me.

But in any case, it really doesn't matter. Honestly, I don't want people to think I hate UHLE, so I'm just gonna let it go.
