a Voodoo card is video card from 3dfx Interactive, this company as been bought by nVidia in 2000. Voodoo cards were the high-tech card when they were here. the 3dfx cards are using an special 3d called "Glide" (glide2x/3x.dll). They started in PCI (voodoo rush/1/2) and after AGP & PCI (Banshee/3/4/5)

evoodoo is simply a wrapper that take the glide fonctions and change them to show in D3D for all current cards. (Since only 3dfx card were using Glide mode)

EDIT: look in my signature...

ohhhhh, 3dfx makes them? i could've sworn i saw their logo when i played hydro-thunder at the arcade, and i think when i had my old pentium (95-98) some of the games i wanted to play needed 3dfx
can a 3dfx card (PCI) work if i have say another AGP 8x card in here?
EDIT: oh yeah, where can i still buy them?

The decent one
You can have a voodoo card as an addon above your other card. If you wanna play N64 emulation I'd recommend picking up a voodoo 2 from ebay.

so the voodoo2 is better than a voodoo 5500 PCI for n64 emulation?

In fact the Voodoo 5 is better but a voodoo 2 has afaik all the blending modes you need for emulation, the only limits are the resolution of 800x600 and the speed of course, but if you want to enjoy it with a high resolution and maximal speed I'd say: go for the voodoo 5. Maybe Gonetz will implement hardware T&L and scaling options, and then the voodoo 5 has a lot of advantages.

Voodoos dont support HW T&L, its impossible except via software. But yes, you can get a V5 5500 PCI as secondary card, if you only have one monitor, you will just have to switch the plug from video card at the back when you want to play Glide games. And be sure to download other drivers than those on windows XP (they dont support Glide and OpenGL). Get the Amigamerlin drivers for Voodoo4/5.

A Voodoo 5 5500 PCI is your best bet. I've got one, and I also just ordered an AGP one, 'cause I intend to do some modding and want one for backup. Hehehe.

As for drivers, the best set is currently Amigamerlin 3.0XP with MesaFX for OpenGL.

BTW, Glide64 is amazing.

If you already have a gf3+ or Radeon 9600+ I really don't think it's worth it to buy a Voodoo card for N64 emulation. Even if the new Glide64 is amazing, who's to say that Rice's/Jabo's/gl64 or another plugin won't top it in a few months? Regardless, Jabo's plugin worked flawlessly on my old gf3 with 90% of the games and Rice's plugin was great for the few games that had trouble (NFL Blitz, All Star Baseball 2000, etc).

I don't know.. If your into N64 games, glide64 on a voodoo 5 5500 pci/agp looks freaken amazing with framebuffer and 4xFSAA(better FSAA quality than Nvidia and also AA's Alpha textures). ;) As well as of course lewpys glide plugin in psx emulators. Heck, glide in any emulator on a voodoo 5 looks amazing. :D Impact, zinc, ect.

I'm sure glad I still have my voodoo 5 5500 pci even after I started upgrading to this Fx5900u.
