ok i will open my heart to you ;)
i had a (just one?..) virtual girlfriend about 1 year ago. we "met" at a chat group via cellphone (blah! chat, TIM) and we'd stay "together" for 8 months, about many kilometers of distance (3 states distant). i did not have pc that time, so everyday I phoned her. we stopped to talk when I reached the mark of ~900 dollars of telephone debit o_O (and my mom was about to cut out my head). then I started to court a girl here and I finished with my virtual one. we are friends now, we talk everyday in msn :)

At your service, dood!
Virtual courtship is 99% of the time, an Illusion. As you can always count on one thing, lies... both of you will continuasly lie to each other to make yourself look more appealing... i.e. If shes fat she says shes thin or you're fat and you say you're thin or she's a he... ;)

Then there is the matter of the huge distance seperating you and the amount of money you have to spend to keep contact... is it worth it? Also there is the fact of both of you being obsessed with internet chat to start that in the first place... personally I doubt i'd want to be with someone in real life who loved my computer more than I do ;)
--yes i'm selfish!

The exception to the rule is if you actually have the guts to go visit each other and you turn out to be a good couple... my brother managed to pull this off, I may not approve of the method in which they met but i'm happy for them... they live together now but the distance between them was not that far.

I've hooked up with two people I met over the internet. Each situation was rather different.

The first, it was a girl who lived about 10 miles away, during my senior year of high school (she was in a different school system), so it didn't remain much of a 'virtual' courtship. But, we did meet on the internet, and chatted there for a bit before we actually met.

The second relationship was somebody I was friends with online on a MUD for a couple of years before we met at a gathering for the game. We looked up for a long-distance relationship for awhile after that, after about 6 months she moved in with me, and now, just over 6 years later, we've been married for 3.5 years.

So, it can happen. :)

cool :)
but the worst thing in it is the loneliness.
this truly makes the relationship fade.

I actually met my real life girlfriend online... Our parents worked together, we talked online for a year, and have now been together for 2 and a half years...so, yeah.

Did you miss the REAL LIFE part of my sentence, or are you referring to someone else, because she is very real, and usually right here next to me, watching TV.

Ok.... Seriously, everyone in this thread, really need to get a life.... I've seen so much of this on a website that I used to manage for a friend, and really ticked me off. But I supose that everyone that runs a website forum has their own way of doing things.. :p
