Not sure why the 1.7 post was closed... Is there seriously no way i can find out the differences between 1.6 and 1.7 without waiting until its released? I know people keep saying that donating for the simple reason that you 'get something' is not the right reason to donate, but let's look at reality for a sec. Free 'limited' versions of stuff exist all over the place, and also all over the place, people offer more feature enhanced versions of the same project for a certain sum of money. I understand completely that P64 is free and in order to show our appreciation, donations are encouraged, but offering an incentive like access to the 1.7 beta immediately contradicts the whole mindset. Now all of a sudden its a business, because when you donate, you're getting something - so it's in your best interest to advertise that something so that it encourages people to donate..
its like if someone gave me free bread all my life, but then they ask me to start paying them back for the free bread they've given me, but if i start paying them back, they might make me some sandwiches. Regardless of whether or not i pay them, ill still get some free bread, but they're enticing me to pay with the (possibility) of free sandwiches, with no obligation to that fact, even after i pay, they could make the decision to even stop giving me bread..
By encouraging people to donate, and providing a product to the people to donate as incentive, youre playing on peoples understanding of a simple business process. but then stating that your obligation to the project is not assured, and that it could just drop off without a moments notice, it's almost like false advertising.. youre wanting your cake (peoples donations) and eating it too (claiming no responsibility to the project).
I may be way out of line here because im so new to p64, and basically just found out about it last week - so i dont quite understand the amount of time that this project has been underway. But i run an independant record label which i put a LOT of my time into and do not get paid for. Because of that, I feel can't just ask people to reward me for the time I've put into it while giving them the incentive that if they reward me, i may possibly give them music to listen to. its backwards business. I give them music, if they enjoy it, they reward me by paying for it. the P64 model seems backwards...
all im saying is that if youre offering a product as incentive to get people to donate, then play it up and help people understand more about that product - tell me why i want that product as opposed to the free one you offer? Im sure if you treated it more like such, youd get more donations as people feel they are actually getting something for their donation, as opposed to the hesitation they might feel that it's all just an empty promise. Im sure there will still be people who've been using p64 since day one who feel the obligation and desire to help you out by donating simply for the good karma, but there are people like me who feel that based on the lack of emotional attachment to you guys, i dont just want to hand over some money to people i just met & hope it pays off. I dont feel like i owe you anything yet & you have to understand that there are people with this mindset.
Just trying to play the devils advocate here - so you can see that there are other viewpoints than the ones whove been with you since the start. I hope you are not offended by the comments I've made, as i mean them in the most respectful expression possible.
