What a cool little invention...

"Some interesting news from Region 1 this morning in relation to the upcoming Bond #20 flick 'Die Another Day'.

MGM sent out in excess of 5,000 promotional discs this week to promote the upcoming flick. What was unique about these discs was that they contained the following warning:

"Once removed from its packaging, the DVD will self-destruct in 36 hours!"

Whilst nothing so dramatic actually occurs, the promo DVD does indeed die!!! The technology underlying these special 'self-destruct' promo discs has been developed by a company named Flexplay Technologies.

Flexplay Technologies have developed a special self-immolating DVD technology which applies a trademark coating to the DVD surface during the manufacturing process. When the DVDs are exposed to air, the countdown begins and eventually the DVD becomes unusable within a pre-selected time frame (e.g. 8 hours to 60 hours).

Obviously this technology will have a major impact on the future of DVD manufacturing, distribution and rental opportunities. You can read more about Flexplay Technologies at their website. http://www.flexplay.com/"

nifty shit :)

It's a nice idea but as for practical im not sure. How much would it cost to make one of those, imagining the cost for blockbusters they would have to get tonnes of the buggers:)

well i guess you must start 'backupping' the dvd as soon as you opened it or just create an iso of it.

But what is the package is broken? then air could go in en ruine the dvd!

I've seen this before. On the Fifa 2003 box it says WARNING: THIS DISC WILL SELF-DESTRUCT JUST IN TIME FOR THE '04 SEQUEL..

lol

funny though, 36 hours is still long enough to rip the disc, and I thought we were supposed to be cutting down on waste ;)

I prey, not pray.
This is how rental companies plan on deploying soon. I think these discs actualy cost around 20-40 cents each in bulk.
