SVN 32Bit Vs 64

This has probably been asked before but I couldn't seem to find a definitive answer.

Basically I ordered a new laptop (specs below) and want to know before it comes, what operating system to use with it.

Are the 32bit builds almost as fast as the x64 ones now?

Id appreciate clarification (and some average frame rates) from people with similar specs to mine :

Intel® Core 2 Duo Processor T9300 (2.50 GHz, 800 MHz FSB, 6 MB L2 cache)
4096MB 667MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM [2x2048]
nVidia® GeForce Go 8600M GT with 256MB DDR2
160GB Free Fall Sensor (7200RPM) Hard Drive
Fixed Internal 8X DVD+/-RW Drive
Wireless 1505 Wireless-N Mini-Card
17.0" Widescreen WXGA+ (1440x900) TFT Display with TrueLife

Thanks!

Just install the 64-bit OS. you can run both 32-bit and 64-bit versions on the 64-bit OS but you can only run 32-bit on 32-bit.

I would prefer to use 32bit though since that's what's coming with it.

All i wanted to know was if the performance difference between the x64 and 32bit builds was slight or huge.

if it is slight I wont bother with xp/vista x64.

Sorry if that wasn't clear from my initial post.

With the massively increasing usage of 64-bit tech (and that all of your laptop's hardware has perfect 64-bit drivers), and its proven massive potential performance advantages, I'd recommend using a 64-bit OS regardless of the difference it makes with Dolphin, specifically, Windows XP X64 (not only does it perform much better than Vista 64-bit, I'm sure you're aware of Vista's overall shittiness.. if not, as a wise man once said, "google it").

The speed difference between the 32 and 64-bit SVN builds of Dolphin isn't that severe. On my system, a couple FPS at best, and that varies with certain games.

I'd say you would gain 10-15 fps with the 64-bit version with your setup. So, to answer your question, you will loose 10-15 fps if you want to use the 32-bit version.

Keep in mind these numbers are not exact and does not mean all games will see this much of a gain, but it should give you some idea of what you would be missing out on.

And to add my own advice from experience, use the x64 version OS because you will always get higher fps in Dolphin than an x86 OS.

The driver support for XP64 is utter crap and the whole OS isn't that well thought.
Yeah, its core is based on Server 2003 with is a very great thing, but I would ALWAYS recommend Vista 64 over XP64 espacially for developer.

And since Vista is crap, I'd stick with x86 XP overall.
I get good framerates with my rig. I doubt 64 bits would yield any (needed) improvement.

Personally I recommend going with the x64 Vista, as you'll notice an improvement over the x86 version and XP for applications, games and emulation. XP is getting dated, and patches will soon stop if they didn't already as Microsoft is severing XP support.

Also Vista is quite stable, haven't experienced any crashes/blue screens yet unlike XP except for the normal generic crashes with applications which is no different than XP.

The advantages with Vista and emulation is you can use the DX10 version of Gsdx with PCSX2 which is faster and has less glitches than the DX9 version so long as you have DX10 compliant hardware.

There might be improved speed in other emulators, games and applications running them under Vista than XP, at least for me there is. :)

I second that (e)motion! ;)

I have tweaked many OS's since the early days to my liking, all of them set me back for a month upon install before I got past the little "changes" and performed "par" to my previous OS.

I actually run two Vistax64's, one at work and one here (I wouldn't touch the x86), and one XP machine purely for VPN/Work from home.

You just gotta luv Dx10 and Vista's stability, there's more than one emu/app out there to let loose on it. And driver support has never been this flooded...

Hell! Go for XPx64 and experience that you could've taken that extra mile....weekly.

Anyway, before I stink of Gates's wind, the only ACTUAL setback on vista for me is the line-in monitor support for my sound devices... But they did a hell of a job on the sound mixed so I have to say I'm cool with it.

Ah yes, I do stink. I forgot to put in a couple of SVN tainted sentences, of which I can crisply announce that I do getter better results with the X64 builds. Be it in Vista or not.

I also have experienced quite a few BSOD's back on XP and none on any of my Vista rigs. Honestly the only drawback of 64 bit so far for me is Gametap doesn't support it, but that service isn't so great anyways...

You gotta be bullshittin. The only time I've ever had a BSOD on XP was when I was testing the "CrashOnCtrlScroll" registry key. Vista I've had BSOD plenty of times.

Depends on one's hardware setup and drivers more than anything. Personally, I've only had XP BSOD on me once, when I fiddled with some drivers too much.

I don't see what the big deal is over driver support for 64-bit.

For me I have found every single driver my computer needed easily, on Windows XP x64 Edition. No BSOD. I'm happy :)

Also it supports the MSSTYLES patch, and still lets you do a great deal of modifying to your liking.

Direct answer without the bull****:

Zelda Windwaker 32bit: 11 FPS on intro, after passing huge island around 18
Zelda Windwaker 64bit: 16 FPS on intro, after passing huge island around 25

Zelda Twilight Princess 32bit: Infront of Link's house 11 FPS
Zelda Twilight Princess 64bit: Infront of Link's house 14 FPS

Amd Athlon 64 X2 (2,2GHZ), Dual Core turned on, D3d9 plugin because OGL slows down for me.

Used Rev 223 on both Operating systems.

Actually, it's not that much, it's more like 10 to 20%

btw, it's still better to use a x64 OS, but you might have troubles with some drivers...

P.S: i'm using the same settings for both x64 and x86, with OGL plugin @ 640x480 - dualcore on, for WW - off, for TP
