SDL vs DirectInput

What's the diffrence between these?
From what I know, SDL is available both to windows and linux...but that's mostly what I know.
I don't have the knowledge to modify SDL code, either...I don't have a documentation. Although I could easily find one I guess. But my main question stands before I make a move.
