My voodoo 3 works with directx 9 so I don't see how that could be the problem. Besides directx9 is backwards compatable all the way to directx 5 I believe. I think it has some problems with older versions. Maybe the install got botched some how and some files got currupted.

Actually, no. Voodoo3 has no DirectX 9 support.

Hell, 3dfx folded before DirectX 8 was released.

The driver is pretty much 100% DX7 compatible, but it's only "mostly" DX8 and "NOT AT ALL" DX9. Even the legendary 3dhq (who did indeed make quite solid advances in the Direct3D driver!) didn't get DX9 compatibility up to full, though they were really mainly focusing on DX8.

Really there isn't anything wrong with dell pc's, but compaq and hewlett packard's suck. They also tend to mess up quicker than any other pc on the market.

There are no offical drivers that support Voodoo3 with winxp, but there are unoffical ones that do (http://www.voodoofiles.com/type.asp?cat_id=1). As for removing directx... I wouldn't advise it... you'd just be best off reinstalling your windows. If you're using WinXP, you can use the cd on bootup, and tell it to repair XP, that *may* reinstall DX9(no guarantee though). And for editing the regestry, I would seriously advise AGAINST it, because it sounds to me like you don't know much of what you're doing, because if you delete the wrong thing(s), you can cause serious damage to your OS, causing you to reinstall everything anyway, and, losing all of your stuff on the HD. I'm also guessing that your HD is only in one partition, so backup that way would be tough. If you have a CDR, you may want to back up anything you don't want to lose if you're messing with the regestry, AND have your OS, cdkey and bootdisk (if you have a earlier version of windows) at hand.

You could do a dual boot so you have two op systems.

Rename the second one Window2.

After you have sorted out the second install just del the original windows file.

Then make win xp so it dont look for the first install on boot(original).

This way you don't lose any stuff on ya hard drive.

Just buy a new graphics card, I remember trying to play N64 on my old 'graphics controller' - a 64MB card even gives you a vast improvement.

I've never had onboard and I never will x-cept my old windows laptop that peice of S***! :ranting: it made me so angry i just wanted to pull a jason on the thing :jason: . Even my apple laptop has an ATI 5700 pro in it! if you have an agp slot I would suggest going out and getting yourself a video card. (btw my laptop deleted its own harddrive overnight on its 5th bday!)

I was saying that my Voodoo 3 worked fine with directx 9 installed. I didn't say that it had directx 8 or 9 features, I know that. My writing is kinda sloppy and I was writing that really fast so I kinda messed up when I was saying it. :happy:
