Quake 2 Lagging

When I play Quake 2 I occasionally get a severe framerate drop from around 60 FPS to around 5 FPS (no this is not because of explosions, it just happens when walking around a level). It is enough to make the game unplayable. I tried all these plugins and messed with their settings to no avail: Glide64 Wonder Plus, Jabo D3D6, Jabo D3D8, Rice Video 6.1.0. Also messed with the "Rom Settings" in the settings menu but no improvement. Is there anything I can do or is this some problem with the emulator itself??
