Project64 Caused a Windows color problem

Hi, this is my first time posting here. I was just playing StarFox64 in fullscreen using Project64 v1.6. And when i take off the fullscreen, a chunck of the left, upper screen turns like grey, I put it back in fullscreen and it fixed. So now I go back to window mode, and the emu loads. And all of a sudden everything turns like purple. All my windows looks purple, videos and games have horrible defenition. And i can see like purple pixels scattered in random places. I reseted the computer several times, but that didnt fix it. I tried windows in safe mode, and still all purple. I disisntalled, reinstalled Pj64, but that doesnt work either. I dont know wat the hell is wrong. I reinstalled the driver for my Nvidia 6600, and nothing. And if i take a screen pick, and send it, it will look perfectly fine to other people. I just see all purplish, its horrible someone help me fix this!

sounds like a hardware failure. probably coincidence that you were using pj64 at the time then.
try changin resolution/colour depth.
do you normally use your system to play Direct3D games?

Yeah i use my Nvidia 6600 all the time never had this proble, I have doom3, FEAR, half life 2 all of em work perfect. And its not the video card cuz i tried another 1 and its all purple. Its like, the constant changin from fullscreen to windows killed my display setting or messed something up in windows. It really sucks.

that does suck. a bit late for you, but the way to avoid constant display switching with pj64 is to set fullscreen to match your desktop details..
doesnt sound like pj directly could cause this though, sorry..

No, are you crazy? Since when do monitors suddendly "break" and change to purple color? I was just playing and emulator, how is that gona "break" my monitor. The only way it would break would be if i drop it or something.

i agree going purple is weird, but changing res needs the monitor to resync. this is the most likely time for it to break (along with turning it on).
its more "crazy" to say that pj64 can break your monitor, sorry

I didnt say the emulator broke the monitor. You people aren't thinking, this isnt a hardware problem. Nothing physically "broke". This is a software problem, but since none of you even heard of this, nor know how to fix it, i might as well just reinstall windows, im wasting my time here.

um .... your monitor in fact CAN break without being dropped.

First off any number of various pots on it could 'fizzle' out for lack of a better term. Then there's always fuses getting blown, wiring shorting out, tube problems, etc...

You particular problem however sounds like the green gun is out which would cause it to go purple all over. If it was blue missing it would be kinda yellowish or if it was red missing it would sorta blue looking.

But then you say another monitor does the same thing which in turn makes it sound as though it is in fact the card or possibly drivers. Kinda weird since the problem points to the monitor though.

Anyway if your so inclined to completely reinstall the OS to try to fix then by all means do what you wish. I would however start with video card drivers reinstall, DirectX reinstall, try another video card if you have one handy (another Nvidia would be best to avoid any further driver issues). If still nothing then whip out the big troubleshooting guns.

I think the main point everyone is making is that it's not PJ64 that caused the problem, that's just a 'red herring'. Stuff like this happens to all of us at some time or another. For instance when one of my hard drives died last year while I was playing Soldier of Fortune 2. Did the SoF2 game cause the drive to die? No, of course not, just happened that's what I was doing when it died finally. ;)

good luck! I hope you do find a easy fix. computer problems always suck since you lose either time or money somewhere. :/

He said that he tried it with a different video card, not a different monitor. Therefore, it is the monitor.

You are correct. I breezed right over it and just read "tried another one" assuming he meant another monitor since I didn't read it thoroughly.

my bad

And Trotter is right. If the connector simply isn't tight enough or even a bad pin or line in the cable is bad it could cause the same effect. I had a big 21' CRT that used one of those BNC 5 prong cables to 15 pin VGA. Somewhere in the cable was a bad spot, simply bending it wrong caused it to turn 'blueish'. A cable replacement solved that one, though not all monitors obviously have a replaceable cable.

I think that Rami6 dude should try with a different monitor before reinstall windows or call people crazy.
It's very likely the monitor's fault.
Me too while I was playng with pj64( in some other occasion with another emulator) had a problem with monitor and video drivers while the monitor was trying to re-sync. Fortunally, windows shot down by itself "to prevent any damage to the display ". I assume then that the display can be damaged without being dropped to the floor.
I am always careful now to set the full screen resolution and refresh rate of the plugin exactly the same as my desktop or the other way around.
