Is there a program (for Windows or for Linux) to sacn the HD surface (not the file system) for errors in kinda a fast way?

Doing a full surface scan is just a slow procedure. I used to use Norton utils, which had a bit of a speed boost for most hard disk activities, maybe you want to check it out. Defrag was still slow as hell though... not that you asked

Norton? some freeware program?

Just try some trialware. The real thing, just limited in the number of days you can use it. Something like a year, though it only says 30 days, haha.
