Phantasy Star Online V2 Serial & Access Key? Please Explain.

When i try to play Phantasy Star Online V2 it asks me for a serial number and access key. Can someone please explain this to me? Also if i enter a legal retail serial and key say my harddrive crashes, but i managed to keep a save of my character, can i just copy my backup save file to the hd and enter the serial and access key accociated with the character when it asks me or am i *cencered* and can no longer use that serial and need to ask for a new one?

i can explaine that

just like the console you need to have the key from the game

you can use the save again if ur hd messes up "BUT" (you must have the same key you used when playing pso)
