Perfect Dark, Goldeneye running REALLY slow

OK, before I say anything here are my specs:

Duron 800
256mb SDRAM
Geforce4 ti4200 64mb
Windows XP Pro
PJ64 1.5 w/ default plugins

When I play Goldeneye or Perfect Dark, it runs really well, max FPS, until I get into the game, then it goes to 30, and hovers there. Occasionally, in an action scene, it'll drop to 20, and sometimes when I'm in a corridor or similar it'll rise to 40.

However if I change weapon to punch (or similar) and simply look at the floor, I hit 60fps. As you can imaging, though, its hard to play when you're looking at the floor.

As far as I can see, this is a problem with video. Whenever I see something complicated (eg. gun, bad guys) it goes max-payne style. I've tried switching on all the options in the video tab (with hide advanced options off) to no avail. I tried some Daedalus video plugin, but that wouldnt run Perfect Dark and ran Goldeneye really badly (ie. HEAPS of gfx bugs). I've tried turning off sound, and changing input plugin. Still the same.

Surely my Duron 800 should be able to run this? I know my ti4200 should be able to.

Anything else to suggest?

This is a core problem with the emu, even with your below specs you should get ok speed.
2 put it simply, use 1964 with jabos video plugin, and azi sound (jobos doesnt work with 1964) you should get a blazing 60 fps easy...enjoy.
KEEP IT REAL.

(Ok i have not been at the forum in ages if this reply is a couple of weeks overdue well...... ) if this is the case then this forum is dying.. i remeber when the topic would last like 6 hours on the first page.

For Perfect Dark:

Try it with Advanced Block Linking *On*.

Make sure it's on counter factor 2.

if the game is slow nothing u do is gonna make it full speed apart from upgrading whatever is the bottleneck. and i would say it is the memory. trust me i know from experience with these games. especially perfect dark. i spent a lot of time trying to tweak the settings in pj and nothing made it any faster. anyhow, i was using pc133 at that time and i had 256 megs of it, i upped it to 512 and voila, perfect dark worked perfectly. so its definately something that needs upgading. and i can be 99% certain that if u double youre ram u will get full speed. or better still upgrade ure processor as well cos that is a bottleneck too

your forgetting that your pc is much faster than his - even my xp1800 and gf4 440mx cant keep pd and goldeneye running smooth in pj64. it just wont happen.

crummy - before you upgrade anything try pd and g-eye with the 1964 emulator first - they are known to be much faster with these games than pj64 is

I tried GoldenEye right now... And I can imagine you having some problems with it... Mostly it ate around 50% CPU, but in some fights, it got as low as 1%.... And I'm still on a 2100+....

Yeah, I did notice something

Windows being low on free RAM does seem to cause the
Advanced Block Linking to work slower, causing lots of pauses.

Advanced Block Linking will hopefully work better after freeing up
RAM and defragmenting the hard disk drive with a *good*
defragmentation utility such as Diskeeper and Perfect Disk

OK, with 1964 i can get it run pretty well. in fights it goes slow. however though its usually at full speed its quite skippy sometimes and the sound is completely unintelligible. :(

guess i'll wait till the next upgrade.

You may have some luck minimizing the sound skipping under 1964 if you try some of the older Azimer's Audio plugins. Some games I've seen work fine with .20 but will skip using .30. Alternatively, you can search around for a bit and try the .40 beta (adds a few more 'tweakables'). NOTE: Though the sound in Perfect Dark was clearer running .20, I did notice that the speech from other characters in the game would occasionally crash the emulator.

For more useful info, check out the 1964 group under the '1964 v0.8.4 FAQ's (read first)' thread.
