The main intent of the current greenback is to make it so that its expensive as hell to counterfeit an exact replica of a paper note, as well as be pretty durable, and be cheap as hell to produce (2.5 cents per note). All of the above they do quite well.
UK paper money isn't nearly as durable as US greenbacks, so I can see why they want to switch to plastic, but IMO I hate carrying my drivers license, school id, credit card, debit card, etc, as is, let alone carry one additional plastic for every bill that I have (would make my already thick wallet even thicker). Unless of course it became culturaly acceptable for men to carry around purses, which may be OK to brits, but I don't like the idea
