Open Source Alternatives?

Hi there,

I was wondering whether there are any open source, free software alternatives for the Realplayer (to play RM files) and Quicktime Movies, and whether the players are any better than their original relatives. What about a WinZIP, WinRAR, WinACE alternative? Are there any. Thx for your answers.

Quicktime and (maybe) Realplayer install all kind of services, popups, etc on your computer and you can get around it by using Quicktime Alternative and Realplayer Alternative.

the people that released k-lite codec pack were going to add real and quick alternatives to create a megacodecpack. not sure what happened to it but it was a great idea.

Aaaaah fine! Just found the realplayer alternative. Now, I remember there was an alternative for Kazaa called Kazaa Lite, but I cant find it anymore. Anyone have an idea whether its still possible to use the Lite version? And what about a Quicktime alternative? :w00t:

Kazza Lite is gone now, thanks to Kazza shutting it down. you'll be lucky if you can find it anywhere on the web, and even more lucky of Kazza doesn't change their program so that people with Kazza Lite can't use their network now.

Shouldn't be too hard to find, especially if you use Bittorent or Shareaza to find it. My Kazza Lite still works and I doubt that Kazaa will try to prevent Lite users from using Kazaa because they know someone would come up with a new Lite hack in about 10 minutes. And with the Quicktime alternative, it's called Quicktime Alternative.

with real alternative install you can play RM with Windows Media Player, which is fine, there are also plugins to let you play RM in Winamp, but they arent great

they cannot really block K-Lite since it doesn't use a KaZaA specific net, it uses the FastTrack network, KaZaA shutthem down for stealing their name or something
