Ogre Battle 64 (again, sorry)

I saw a bunch of OB64 posts and hoped they'd contain the solution to my problem but.. they didn't. So here goes, hope you can help:

I'm running Project 64 1.6, the rom is 'Ogre Battle 64 - Person of Lordly Caliber (U) [!]'. The game starts out great, goes to the main menu, starts the cinema for Start Game just fine, but:
If I use tutorial mode to go straight into the game engine, (using Jabo's D3d8 1.6) I find that the dialog with Deneb occupies a tiny corner in the upper left of the screen (window or fullscreen, it still just uses the upper left of the designated area). When the dialog finishes and we move into the overhead map tutorial.. it fades to black, and never fades in again. Interestingly, Jabo's 1.5.2 has no such issue with it being in the tiny corner of the screen, but still never manages to resolve into the actual game. Near as I can tell, I'm using all install default settings. (I played around with them to no success, then set them back.)

This is my first time with Pj64, or any N64 emulation. I've had a lot of success emulating SNES and PSX though, so I'm not clueless.. just displaced. Anyhow, any help would be most welcome.

Negative..

Gave Rice 6.0.0 a shot, solved the dialog-shrunk-in-the-corner issue, but the map still doesn't ever appear. :plain: Which Rice are you using that works?
