What's new

Now this was peculiar (partitioning + formating question)

Maybe someone can offer an explanation. Here's the situation:

I just rebuilt my computer with some new parts (mobo, CPU), and I decided to re-partition my RAID array from 3 to 2 partitions. I fired up FDISK and set my primary partition to about 4 GBs, and created a second partition with the remaining space (of 40 GBs total). After partitioning, I started formating (via DOS). The 4gig main partition was fine, but when I formated my second partition it hung at 11%. I rebooted and tried again and the same thing happened. Then I FDISKed again with the same settings and the problem happened again, it hung at 11% when formating the second partition. Theeeeen I decided to reset my RAID array. I created a new stripe set, FDISKed, and it happened again.

I was pissed at this point thinking one of my HDs was damaged somehow, but I tried FDISK one more time. This time however, I set the primary partition to 5 GBs, and again used the remaining space in the second partition. Now, finally, both partitions formated without problems.

So here I am, and everything is cool, but I was forced to set my primary partition a little bigger than planned. I've done this dozens of times on different systems, and a few times on this very array, but I've never had this problem. *confused*

Anyone care to take a stab at this?

hmmm

What format and fdisk version? I've heard that some w98 format.com's don't like partitions above 40 GB or something. Can't really say anything :S

Yes, Partition Magic is an excellent program, but last time I used it I could'nt put my HD back together! It was stressing.

That sucks...

Anyway, I'd suggest running scandisk and defraging your hard drive before doing anything with PM...
