Noob Questions!

ok, I had P64 for a real long time and then redid my computer and gave up on the emulation thing for a while while I played half life and unreal and the like. In order to play HL2, I got a new video card and a new motherboard to be able to play the game with proper graphics.

Recently I happened came across a *file* (this part is vague as to not break the forum rules) which contained every N64 release ever (including multiple releases for each game and imports). Extatic I re-installed P64 because its the best nintendo 64 emulator I have ever come across and with my updated computer ever game seems to work at an amazing speed.

Here are my questions, some are fairly noob, other are...well they're all noob...anyways...

FIRST: I am looking into buy a controller for my PC to better simulate a N64. I'm thinking of the saitek p2500 because it has a layout similar to a mix of Playstation and N64 (basically it looks like a dual shock PS controller but 6 buttons on the front instead of just the 4 circle square triange and X). Now, I would like help on how I would set up this game pad once it is purchased. would it automatically be detected or would I need to manually enable it on P64?

SECOND: This same controller has a rumble feature, would this be taken advantage of on P64? or would I need a third party plug in? if so could I get instructions on where to find the best one?

THIRD: Continuing with the plugins...while waiting for my controller I found an input plugin that takes advantage of the mouse in many first person shooter games for N64 such as doom and golden eye (NRage). Where would I place this .dll file? I know it goes in the "default plugin folder" but is that just under third party plugins or is it a different folder?

FOURTH: Where can I get video plugins? MY rogue squadron game will not run properly but the comment on the file says I can fix it by downloading a plugin. if anybody knows a plugin that would fix rogue squadron PLEASE let me know (I LOOOOOVE that game)

For now I think thats all I need, but I may be back with more noob questions!!

Thanks,
nEmo

2. Yes, it should work fine.

3. Plugins folder, the manual included with PJ64 covers issues like this.

4. From this site, scroll down to the downloads section on the main page of emutalk.

Rogue Squadron is not currently supported by any graphics plugin, the nearest is Nemu's graphics plugin (by Lemmy) the game is still a graphical mess though. I advise either stick to playing it on your N64, or find the PC game for sale cheaply.

Doomulation

?????????????????????????
Or, you can get an n64 controller and an adaptoid. If you have a gaming console, you can also get an adaptoid for that system to plug into the pc.

I ended up buying the saitek p2500, I personally enjoy more of a playstation style controller, plus we sell it at best buy and I get an employee discount. I'll be using it for other emulators such as snes9x and ePSXe as well as non FPS PC games (prefer mouse and keyboard for my FPS games).

just wondering is anyone working on new video plugins? not just for rogue squadron but any other games that are buggy.

also, is there a list of perfectly working roms against roms that have video/sound/other issues and how to resolve them if possible?

Thanks,
andrew

PS, ya I figured out the plugin thing right after I posted, I felt kinda dumb, it was pretty obvious.

Depends what games you play, specs you have and how you want them to look. I suggest that you do try out a few with each game and pick the best compromise.

first and foremost I'd like to run at least at 50 fps, but quality is important to me (1600 x 1200 resolution would be perfect). I have a 256 mb video card, radeon 9550se, 512 memory (possibly purchasing more) and a 2.26 GHz computer.

if you have personal favourites just tell me those, there are way too many to check each one, or maybe tell me which work best with pj64 or were made for pj64....that would be nice, just something to cut down the search for a nice plugin.

The must haves are Jabo's D3D8 1.6, Rice's Video, Glide64 (with Hacktarux wrapper) and Direct64.

Jabo's is a trade-off, with great compatibility, OK image quality, fast speed, and hi-res hardware framebuffer. Doesn't have all that many options to use.

Glide64 is the most compatible graphics plugin available. Again, OK quality. It is slower than other plugins when used with the wrapper and the hardware framebuffer only works with a Voodoo4/5. Glide64 is hampered by some wrapper and Voodoo hardware limitations.

Direct64 is the best looking by a long way (if you discount Rice's Hi-Res texture loader which Direct64 will have next release anyway along with a Cel-shading option) with simulate overscan, orkin sampling and filtering options that leave no glaring artifacts like the other plugins often do. Also has a hardware framebuffer. At higher resolutions it may bring a 9550se to it's knees. Compatibility is low compared to the others, so no complaining if a game will not work.

Rice's Video caters to many different needs with the most options of any plugin. Very compatible. Has a compatible but low-res software framebuffer. Has a lot of texture enhancement features as well including the hi-res loader/dumper. Sometimes has bugs when used with PJ64, but works with 1964 well.

No plugin exists that has all the best qualities of each. It can be sumised as:

IQ: Direct64
Versitility: Rice's Video
Speed: Jabo's
Compatibility: Glide64

Not to mention that some games will only work (well) with 1 plugin.
