What's new

Newbie questions : )

Hello, I have been reading this forum for bit and have kind of figured out how to get Dolphin working :). I do have a couple of questions I hope you guys can answer though (or girls if the case be).

I realize that 32x vista or computers run "worse" than 64x... I have 32x processor (I'm pretty sure?) and I get about 3-7 FPS in the game SSBM (in a match) depending on how many characters I am fighting. So...

1. Is this normal?

2. Do you think its possible to get my FPS up to maybe 10-15 in game using tweaks/plugins?

3. (off topic) Would compiling some of the newer "revisions" help anything for me? No clue where to start on that.

I am not very good with understanding computer hardware, but I know most of the basics. I also have the dual core and anti gap in my emulator options checked supposedly to help increase FPS.

Here is what I have, I also have my specs on my profile for my laptop.

Dolphin_x86_r186 (with 8 plugins, I think this is the newest build for 32x)
Windows Vista SP1
Intel Dual Core T8300 @2.4GHz
Nvidia Geforce 8600 GT
3 GB of RAM
32x operating system
Dell

Thank you for any help you can give, I am a poor college student and cant afford a new computer... yet. :p

By 32x, you mean x86 (32-bit). And by 64x, you mean x86-64 (64-bit).

Your processor is indeed 64-bit compatible, but you would also need to install 64-bit Windows in order for it to work.

And to answer your questions:

1. It is a little bit slower than what it should be. It should be at about 5-10fps on 32-bit Dolphin.
2. That's not really possible. Translating the PPC GameCube instructions to x86 / x86-64 code, is very intensive, and cannot be split or managed well. Nor can any special tricks/techniques/shortcuts be used. So the best you can do is enable Dual-Core, to put that on a core of its own, but there's not anything else you can do.
3. Yeah, each revision has at least something done, ex. some fixes in the coding, and some performance tweaks the devs came up with. Give it a shot; it won't hurt.

You're way behind on revisions. Look for xtreme2dmax he has up to I think R704. You should be able to get up to 40FPS+ with your processor. Mess around with dual core mode and frame skipping.

Thanks Cerebus5! I was able to get a hold of revisions 704+... they still seem to be running at about 6-7 FPS (in battle) with dual core enabled, and all other options under general configuration ticked. It is much MUCH better then it was though, and I have full sound AND multi controller support?!? Thats what it looked like, I'll have to try it out after I get back from class.
