New to Linux!!!

I'm definitely a n00bie to Linux and thus I'm having major troubles configuring a 56k modem that's apperently supported. I'm using Mandrake Linux 8.1 and I'm required to post from Windows, because I cannot use the modem on my other PC with Linux installed on it. The modem on the PC with Linux is a PCTel HSP56 Micromodem 7890. Obviously, I'm required to install a separate modem driver package, which
I downloaded already from my Windows PC. I currently am getting the following symptoms with KPPP dialer:

I get the error message stating that the modem didn't respond.

-or-

I get the error message stating that the modem is busy, even when the modem isn't busy!

i don't know any drivers for PCTel chipsets......
the only Winmodem that i know that runs fine in linux is the ones with Lucent/Agere chipsets (with proper modules downloaded from internet)

Winmodems are really very difficult to install in linux, but my encore modem with lucent chipset (DSP, not HSP) runs fine with redhat9........

pre-compiled or source code?

i downloaded a precompiled version for redhat9.......
i remember that have a precompiled for debian too, but only for lucent winmodem.....
and have a precompiled sourcecode for various kernels......

Why use HSP modem if good external 56K modem is only $45 (Acorp 56EMSF-2, Conexant (ex-Rockwell) chipset) ?

I can't afford any more modems right now and the only one I saw was a US Robotics Performance Pro 56k modem that costs approximately $80 dollars!

Will this modem be compatible:

A Zoom 3025 V92 56k modem (has a Conexant DSP chipset).

It's what the chipset manufacturer calls a "host controlled modem", not a "soft modem" or a "controllerlful modem". Would that work?

your best bet is a modem where you can set jumpers (hardware modem) those work under any OS.

Jumpers ? Jumpers on external modems is quite rare thing, and it's a different story
($400+ professional modems)
Of course internal hardware ISA modems have jumpers for serial port IRQ and address settings but most of modern motherboards don't have ISA slots... No $50 Courier anymore

It's easier to find Voodoo5 6000 in store than hardware PCI modem And price is about $50-80... It's better to buy something like 56EMSF-2 than one of those buggy PCI modems with same price...

No I wasn't talking about an external jumper modem (those are _very_ expensive).

I have found many places that sell both ISA and PCI hardware modems at reasonable prices (~$65 CND).

AFAIK 3025 is Lucent, not Conexant and it's compatible

It's model 3025C, which does have a Conexant DSP chipset.
