A new disk spec for encrypting data on your disk drive is here at last!
However this might be like the last nasty that was designed for DRM reasons not to protect your data.

The difference is this one the chip is on the hard disk and not in the computer.

And by the way Toshiba is STILL trying to get all those SONY batteries still around on the market. There is an interesting bit on that, apparently Sony manufacturing had been increasing capacity too compete with similiar chemistries. The did so at the expense of the material used to protect and contain the battery. This made the battery more volunerable to droping and moving it about, this process was successful until they decided to reduce the size of this barrier more to improve the capacity yet again. This is where the siren song of the burning Sony batteries came in, there sensitivity to mild impact (IE < 1g impact) made them litterally self short with a light jolt. Coupled with a volatile Lithium polymer electrolyte, they had the tendancy to short and explode or burn nicely. So basically a little bit of cheap plastic was the the begining of the problem, and reducing it's thickness beyond safety factors of the norm. So be advised don't bump your laptop it may catch fire if you are in an earthquake or you bump the table it's on either, perhaps looking at it wrong might set it off. 1 Year later this is still a problem with notebooks that had these batteries!

This will be annoying. I will soon miss the days where I can take out a hard drive, and just plug it in to another computer, and run it. Now I will have to deal with encryption keys.

I hope theres a shutoff switch, so that I don't have to encrypt if I don't want to.
