Need some help with Direct Connect (non P2P)

Hi guys!

Before I tear my eyeballs out searching across the wasteland that is the internet, does anyone know offhand how to set up a direct connect between my desktop (WinXP) and and old laptop (Win95). I just need some old files before I wipe it, and the disk drive isn't handy at the moment, hence my problem. I have a 9 pin to 25 pin serial cable; does anyone know how I need to set up the software end of things?

Much obliged,

you need 2 of the above mentioned cables.

one thingie called a null modem (has 2 female 25 pin Din connectors).

then just use windows help to set up a host connection on your WinXP machine and a connection on your laptop (its pretty simple if you follow instructions)

it works fairly simple but it is SLOOOOOOOOOW!... at least for me it is. The connection is limited to 19.2kbs by windows ACK slightly faster than your good old 14.4 modem. I thought those days were through with my cable modem and my 100Mbs LAN. if you need more help than this just post back

PS the pin out of the null modem is (Just made sure of this on my own null modem)

1 to 1
2 to 3
3 to 2
4 to 5
5 to 4
6 to 8 and 20
7 to 7
8 and 20 to 6

Another method: used a crossed TP5 cable and setup a ftp server on XP and connect with the laptop...

Serial Connection = 115200 ISDN, LPT connection - about 450 kb/s fast enough
to transfer ISO image within 30 minutes.
I have old 486 laptop with 4 Gb HDD (pretty good BIOS in that laptop. eh ;) and no CD-ROM drive. Only problem - under NTish OS NC 5.0 direct connect will not work, under DOS or 9x - no problems.

Flash,

I agree that it should allow up to 115200, but for what ever F#$ked up reason Monkey$haft seems to have limited direct connect to 19.2Kbs. This is on my incomming connection on my Win2000 Desktop which is more than adequate to support 115200... heh if I open the serial in Device Mangler errr device manager I am allowed to select even higher than that. The limitation is in the incoming connection where the max selection is 19200Kbs

Ha ha! Problem solved. I just ordered a nifty little Ethernet PC Card, so I can just hook it up to my main machine and viola! Instant connect!

Thanks for the suggestions though. :)
