a usb uses 5 wires n64 controlers use 3. you have to know what your doing and the skills to connect all 5 wire for any operating system to pick it up.

I've already answered this question in another post.

The N64 has three wires, +ve, ground (-ve) and data. It is powered by the N64, the data signal is a coded signal which has to be decoded by a microprocessor which translates the signal into one which is compatable with the USB standard.

It is very difficult to explain how to do this on emutalk. My advice is buy a book about imputting via the USB port. It should explain which components you need to buy, and how to program them.

The USB port will only accept a signal which confirms to a set protocol, which has to be sent from a USB specific microprocessor. Every single USB device has one, and there a lots of different types on the market. You don't need to know what the protocol is, but you do need to have one. You can program a microprocessor yourself, but you need to know how. A book on USB imputting will explain this.

Alternatively, just do what I did and buy an adaptor.

yoooooooooooo.. I've been looking into this same thing recently. I'm not poor, but I don't like how most of these adapters you buy don't have rumble support or memory pack features, not that I use either actually. I also like making stuff. I have a blueprint on how to do this, but could you tell me where to find a microprocessor that can communicate with usb protocols, and if it's expensive? All the blueprint calls it is a "usb controller" with 20 terminals on it. Aight, take much care.

actually usb only uses 4 wires

but it can't be done anyway as the controller needs to have its voltage adjusted so its easiest just buying an adapter

Gamecube controls are in the same boat as well

XBOX controlers use a non standard usb connection and the 5th wire (yellow) either a polling wire or for a light gun

N64/GCN controllers and GBA port acessories all use a protocol developed by Nintendo called JoyBus. It works similar to Apple's AppleTalk protocol (search Wikipedia for it). In basic terms, don't even bother trying to build your own. I researched this subject a lot a while back, and finally gave up. However, I've found that the X360 controller is a great subsitute (if not a bit pricey).
