The cursor will frequently lock. If I wait a few seconds it will usually come unstuck, but sometimes it will be stuck permanently, requiring a reboot. Occasionaly the cursor will "jump" across the screen when I move it. Software problem, or should I assume the mouse itself is finished? Intellimouse Optical if you're wondering, and it is a few years old.

If other functions are working normally, yeah, it's your mouse. I had similar problem, but when my KEYBOARD was broken. even my mouse got stucked on the screen. :S

Optical mice are known to "jump around" occasionally, but behavior like that should be rare. If it happens constantly then there really is a problem (and of course the getting stuck part).

optical mouses DO die :p in most cases it's just the sensor/led which is malfunctioning. (First you will notice jumps, after that it just won't react)

If you don´t care about it anymore, you may disassemble it and try to clean it´s insides or find some unsoldered things to fix.

congrats whiteX on your 2000th!

try plugging your mouse into another computer, and try a different mouse in your computer, see which one fixes your problem.

heh, new problem. Sometimes, when the cursor jumps, the right-click menu will magically appear, as if I had pressed the corresponding button.

Yeah, I'd say this mouse is definitely knackered...
