MS Sidewinder Controller Issue (Help Appreciated)

Hi there, sorry that my first post is a question, but I'm a bit stumped. I loaded up Chankast Alpha 0.25 last night and all I can say is that I have been very amazed. First of all, great work to all affiliated with the project. I started going through my SB titles and found very few issues with games that I couldn't resolve by searching the boards, but one I have found no answer to.

I am using an older MS SideWinder Gamepad (Pre-USB Model) and I never have trouble with it. My only issue with it so far has been with "Fire Pro Wrestling D". It will recognize button presses, but it will not recognize the directional pad. I've played around a bunch in the controller config and outside gamepad configuration utilities, but I still cannot get it to recognize it. I do know that assigning directions to buttons works for up and down, but nothing seems to phase the directional pad. Any suggestions? I've seen other people getting the game playable, so I must not have something quite right.

Thanks in advance for all that help.

Hmmm, seems I either asked a very dumb question or others are also stumped. :plain:

No idea, the only thing I can think of is assigning the controls to the analogue stick instead, but I'm pretty sure you've already done that.... consider this rather crappy reply to be a bump for someone more knowledgable to help ;)

If this is a serial port or game port (the old ones that came installed on sound cards), then there's a good chance the gamepad plugin won't recognize the commands being given by all buttons or directions. I had the same issue with an older digital 6 button bad. I finally went on ebay and got a 10 button digital/analog controller Axis game pad (usb) and have had no trouble using it. Even though the old game pad ran all my pc games no problem. Good thing is when you can catch the game pads on ebay, they go really cheap. An the look and feel of it is that of a PS2. Also has force feedback. :) I think I got mine for somewhere in the neighborhood of about $4.00.
