memory card corrupt?

when booting up tales of symphonia, I get a message that the memory card is corrupt and it needs to be formatted. I try to continue without saving, or formatting the card, but it just gives me the same message. I also tried moving the memory cards to a different folder but it just makes a new one. any help would be appreciated.

specs-
Radeon X1600 pro
2.0GHz AMD
1GB RAM

I was hitting what I thought was the confirm button on my controller, but it was set to cancel. I formatted the memory card and now I don't get the error. too bad the game won't start now.
