Megaman Soloution

Sorry to make a new thread, but I thought I'd post this for all those (including myself) who've had trouble.

Megaman Fix
-----------

Problem - After a certain point in the game, Megaman64 Hangs (screen goes black, and won't come back) at certain points. This is usually when entering or exiting a door. It doesn't always happen; mostly when moving from one "area" to the next (i.e., leaving the city and entering the marketplace, entering any of the dig areas). Cheats and saves (native or pj64) don't seem to affect these hangs, and they can be reliably reproduced.

Fix -

After resetting my PJ64 options (handy feature, btw - in the pj64 program folder->uninstall>) I did a good deal of adjusting, and the culprit is the CPU core (recompiler or interpreter). The hangs only appear when using recomplier (default) mode. There are no hangs in the interpreter mode, as far as I can tell (and I did a lot of just roaming around and entering different areas to see if it worked, and didn't hang once.

However, on many machines using the interpreter is unacceptably slow. (As a reference, I have 1.2Ghz/512mb RAM/64MB GeForce2 AGP card, and I was running at about 40fps, which is 1/3 too slow, and the sound was very choppy). If you can't run fulltime in interpreter mode, hit F5 to save your game often (at the very least every time you are about to enter a door). When you encounter a hang, change to interpreter mode, reset the game, and load up your last save. Get past the hang point, and save again (native, in game saves also work if a save point is convienient to the hang point; for instance, the exit from the city to the forrest). Change the core back to recomplier, reset again, and hit F7 to load your save.

This may seem overly complicated, but it only takes about 30 seconds (plus the time to recover since your last save, so save often!), but it's worth it to be able to play through the entire game.

Now if somebody could just slove the black-walls problem, the game would be almost perfect!

PS - Make sure you really play with your graphics settings, because some options (like force normal blending) that are usually defaults (or at least on my machine) causes graphical errors (like transparent objects). I'd post mine here, but as everyone has different video cards, it's better to experiement for yourself.

Ok. First off, just saving a state before a hang, going ahead and letting it hang, loading the state and going ahead again seems to make pj go past the crash. No need to change to interpreter. Maybe if the first solution wasn't mentioned.

Secondly, in dungeons, set on "Force Normal Blending" in the advanced options in the options-menu. This will make walls become transparent, but it's still much better than otherwise. Also remember to disable it when going outside. Trust me :)

Well, it only works for me reliably if I change the the CPU core.

Thanks for the tip re: force normal blending - someone in an earlier thread mentioned this, and I did it while outside - which just makes everything transparent.

Finally, could Smiff expand upon his post? Has who unchecked register caching, and why? Is this for the hang (which seems to happen to many people, and is reliably reproducable), or for the black walls?

about half the games that seem to only work on interpreter are really only failing in register caching i.e. there's a good chance of it working on the recompiler if you aren't using reg caching. register caching is an option that only applies to recompilers.

Hey Smiff - I'm not using reg. caching...I've found that not switching from recomplier/interpreter works about half the time on my system, while taking almost the same amount of time (save, reset, load) as switching 'em, so I usually just do it anyway.

The further I am progressing in the game, however, the less I seem to have to do it. I think the key may be it hangs when something has changed since the last time you entered an enviornment, i.e., activated some trigger.

As a side, I'm getting slightly frustrated with the game. I really like it, and never played the playstation version, so it's all new to me. However, I haven't battled an enemy forever; I finally had to download the walk-through to guide me from one activity to the next, because the game seems to lose it's storyline after a certain point.

My problem right now is this, if anyone cares to help (I may make a seperate posting elsewhere with this problem) : I've helped the bullies build their "base", and I've given that nice little painter girl the lipstick (which, without the walk through, I would have never figured out), but the guy in the building at the dock still won't let me out to the boat where the construction workers are. Making this even more annoying is the fact that I have the super jump shoe-things, and can clearly leap over that fence (twice over), but the f*&king thing won't let me. Grrrrrrrr!!!

I'm anxious to get to the next part, as it sounds as if, after all of this figuring out how to get past the hang business, I might get to kick some more reaverbot a$$...

As for how I remember, I think you oughta need to fix the motor on the boat, and then you could use it.
You might just as well take a "peek" in your walkthrough to be sure.

Oh, I looked through the walkthrough already. I know I've got to fix the motor, but I can't get to the boat. In order to get out there, you have to go through the boathouse. Inside there, the guy running the place won't let me exit to the dock so I *can* fix it. I'm assuming I haven't done something to trigger him to let me go further. I think I've done everything in the walk-through up to that point; what's starting to annoy me is that I'm ready for ACTION! :D

I was hoping to find another walk-through to see if I missed something (can't remember who wrote the one I have; I just remember it's filesize was 180k), but haven't had any luck yet.

Another note - I didn't realize it until I started messing with settings again today, but the backgrounds (the sky, at least) have black grid lines over them in anything but 640x480...I heard someone in another thread complaining about that. Now that I know to turn on adv. blending in the dungeons, this game is almost playable!

:D

Yes, it does work...

pichu -

I assume you mean the movie that runs after you defeat the boss in the "pit" (where you have to blow out his treads, and then use projectilies into the little black hatch on top). The fix does work there - that's where I first encountered the problem. Other people here have said you don't need to change the cpu core, but I disagree - especially at the point in the game you are talking about.

You need to change to interp. mode BEFORE the movie, let the movie run, and KEEP IT in interp. mode until after Roll asks you to meet her, and don't switch back to the recompiler until after you are safely back in town.

Trust me, it works. Be patient, play around - you'll get a lot more satisfaction from figuring it out yourself than getting someone else's savestate.

BTW, Doom - Thanks for the tip about the dungeons...I actually liked the black walls (took me awhile to realize they weren't intentional - thought you could only see what was immediately around you). However, the problem was finding certain things [can't tell you how long I messed around in the very first ruin (where you save the guy who's wife runs the item shop) before I found the GD ladder to get out]. With force norm. blending on, I think it looks even cooler.

Thanks again,
