This is evidently of big interest of our visitors, so I'll try to explain how it works (as briefly as I can

) and try to answer your questions.
zorbid: That's exactly it. Our ad server uses a PHP script written by our server admin Stuart. The first time you visit one of the sites in the Emulation64 network, the ad server will place a cookie in your computer and a popup will appear. The next time you visit one of our sites the ad server will check that cookie for some information:
- If it has been more than X hours, a popup will show.
- If it has been less than X hours, a popup will not show.
- X varies, and it's depended on if the ad companies we work with have popup campaigns running. Either way, you will never see a popup twice for several hours.
We've used this script for several months now. If people experience problems, it's their setup that's wrong, ie. your security is set too high (cookies not allowed).
Malcolm: Just like with the popups, there's not always campaigns running, or the server of the ad company is down. The latter when no banner at all is shown. Otherwise we'll show a non-paid "default banner".
Allnatural: try deleting the
[email protected] cookies, don't know if this helps but at least you'll get a fresh cookie that the server can work with.
Trotterwatch: Yeah well, people don't think that these things exist but they do.

Cool to hear your opinions, but to remove all popups is something that I fear won't be possible just yet. Of course I'm hoping that I'll be able to sometime. Popups have replaced regular banners, as these (reg. banners) hardly pay anything anymore and people have learnt not to click them. We have to (and I'm not exaggerating) display tens of thousands of banners just to make one single dollar. Using popups is the only way to (partially) pay for the server.
If you want to donate, paypal
[email protected] a little something and it will be greatly appreciated. A couple of truly amazing people, and real good friends have donated already and I will never forget the help from them. I kiss you.
I want to get rid of advertising too, of course, but I'm a student and I've put in close to one thousand dollars from my own pockets just to keep the machine running until now (and domain fees etc.).
Good thing is that advertising is finally starting to pay off (one ad firm still owe me $250 though, money that I'll never get). Right now it pretty much evens out (I hope). Well, I thought I'd let you know.
