Keyboard/Joystick help

Ok, so I know that this is a lame question, but every time i try to open up a ROM, it tells me that there is no joystick connected. Now i don't want to have to buy a joystick, so i was wondering if there was a way to use the keyboard instead.

please just buy a joypad. Even a very cheap one will do the trick. I have a very low end Logitech dual action and it works fine.
