i know this could be a dumb question but...

Meh...
what would be better? plugging my speakers into my onboard AC97 sound port, which is AC97 2.2, and supports 18-bit ADC (analog digital converter) and DAC (digital analog converter) with 18-bit stereo full-duplex codec. or keep them in my sound blaster live!. and i dont have a 4 speaker system, just 2 (not even a fuckin subwoofer -_-)

Sounnblaster Live! should have better circuits then an onboard solution and I think the DAC on Live! cards are 24bit... But most likely you won't notice any difference...

Another Dumb Question:
------------------------
I had a really old pc once about a year ago,
I was running Cool Edit Pro 1.2 and I was about
to save my file until the HD started going crazy
like it was going to explode, then the HD Shut down.
So I had to reboot the pc. Then at startup I got all these weird blue screens about windows registry
but i got it to the windows gui again. So I went to
a simple game (Minesweeper) and ya know what?
It shut down again. Eventually, it stopped working.
Please note I was using a very old pc (486 66 MHz 16 MB Ram 512 MB HD) Does anybody know what may have cause the HD to act sooo krazy??? Sry for the long post

Maybey the hd was to warm, or the bearing worn out.

I have an old 486 PC (DX4 100MHz, it was a DX 33MHz), and I never had that happen, and it has three HD's and one 8x CD-ROM, and let me tell you, it was packed on that side of the case.

@dmac2003: it chould've been HD failure, what type of sound did the HD make?
Note: this link has five different head crash sounds.

And what was shutting down, the PC or the HD?

HDs have a limited lifespan, kind of like laptop batteries. I'm not sure of the specifics, but it WILL face an unavoidable death in the not too distant future.
They can also crash and vurn. Happens all the time. Usually the 1st thing to go on a machine.

True, but the SB Live's AD/DA' s a HORRIBLY noisy (at least mine are - maybe it's time for a new card?) . The AC97's are a little better, but you can't beat the overall compatibility of the SB stuff.

The AC97 onboard will do you just fine, unless of course you do sound manipulation. There is a difference between the quality of the onboard you have and the live but you probably wouldn't even notice it.
