How to extract music from nes roms?

New here, and I'm looking for the answer to a question.. namely, how to extract music from nes roms, apart from recording wav's directly from the emulator..

any information on the sound format of nes roms, how it works, any players for it, etc, would also be greatly appreciated!

(tried searching for threads on the subject, but came up empty-handed, unfortunately)
