Look for the easy solution first

I know it may sound stupid but, try to answers the stupid questions first. Questions like...

a) Do the headphones works? (try them in other device such a TV or so)
b) Do the headphones have a volume/power control on it?
c) Is this little plugin really designed to plug headphones (refer to the speakers manual)
d) Is there some kind of software controller, speaker control panel or so that can change this pulgin volume?
e) ...

If you are sure the speakers are not working right, then

if they are cover by warranty, go to the shop and ask them to change the speakers, refund your money or so.

if not, try to carefuly open them and look for detached wires on the conector, burnt pieces or so and try to fix it (some friends can good help on that).

I suggest you again to check the most silly things. Have luck!

answers:
a) yeh they work. those are my discman's headphones
b) no they don't, the discman changes the volume not them
c) i looked over my PC manual but it doesn't appear. here's an online review about my speakers, i don't know much about what do i have to look for:
http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/11065_na/11065_na.HTML
d) about the controllers, i have the original sound drivers collection (fall 2003-pretty old but it's the newest in my presario's web on compaq.com). they don't have any kind of regulators, just the main volume ones.

i don't know if they are burnt or something, they work fine. the PC is about 3 years old, so i don't have any more warranty. why do i ask this by now? because i had this question a lot of time ago and i always forgot to ask it.
