DVD Drive Speed

I have been ripping DVD's with Smart Ripper. Everything's fine but I have noticed the max speed my DVD player seems to read at. It's a 16x max DVD player but yet the most I can get out of it from Smart Ripper is 2x. Is this a problem with my DVD drive or is it normal?

Not fast enough, it better fucking be, it's an AMD Athlon XP 2400+, I built the system myself with high speed ram and good quality parts not the shit you get from Time PC's.

Easy, digital ripping isn't automatically full speed.

My old 52x LG CD-ROM rips at about 4x...

My new(er) burner with a 40x read speed rips at something closer to 20x. :)

It's all about how well the drive was built, and such.

Also try RAW reading with no error correction :) That should speed it up ;) But don't do that regularly... ^^

Ok thanks for all that. I'll check to see if DMA is enabled (I think it is but not sure, lol).

It has to do with the speed being the right speed, but it reads fromt he inside out, at tinside, at highest speed, it's gonna be lower because the disk will be going slower ont he inside than on the outside.

So when it starts going furthur out, it might pick up speed. 52X is only the maximum on a 52X drive.

demon, you should really calm down mate.

get a drive-test program, such as nero cd speed. that will tell you the real read speeds of the drive. if you are getting any lower than that when ripping, then im sorry, but it really IS your cpu holding you back. dont you know how cpu-intensive dvd ripping is?
