What's new

Does this count as an emulator? ;)

"starting with the revolutionary Animal Crossing™, a community building adventure. This new game extends game fun from NINTENDO GAMECUBE to Game Boy Advance, opening new worlds, and also links it to trading cards with the introduction of the e-Reader. Players can download full classic NES games to the Game Boy Advance for hand-held fun on the go, and swipe trading cards through the e-Reader, which attaches to the Game Boy Advance to transport messages from the characters, game items and even music."
Now, I thought Nintendo hated this kind of thing...

They did, until they realized they could make money off it... And hasn't Shigiero Miatamoto stated several times that he sees nothing wrong with emulation, it allows younger people to enjoy the games of the past... This could probaly be a result from the old man stepping down from the throne...

I REMEMBER. i was going to answer the question. it's not emulation. it's porting which is different.

It isn`t really porting though... you will technically be `downloading`ROMS onto the GBA. Why would Nintendo bother porting full NES games to give away for free, when they could simply emulate the original? See... its a grey area.

agreed shigsy has some very different perspectives, usually the gamers perspective too, i think it can only be good with him at the helm

just to correct remote, Shigiero Miatamoto (Mario-Maker-Guy spelt wrong) was only questioned about emulation once. and he only stated his view once. Also, he didnt directly approve of emulation, he only said something in the lines of "I'm happy that young people still find games of the past entertaining."

And from that one statement, you are able to comment on his current and probaly neverchanging view on emulation:p

just because he's happy about the intrest doesn't mean he is happy about the illegal activity (and you can spin it however you want it's still illegal) of downloading a game you dont own. maybe, (and this is what I think) his statement was something he said to lead to the news we just heard. like "oh you like those games. . . well here you go then kiddies!"

So... this is basically like a portable MP3 player, only in this case its a GBA cart that you can download NES ROMs to?

the thing is this is positive emulation, as the likely hood of younger generations getting hold of original nes games is very grim, in fact the likelyhoood of younger generations even bothering to see why there is a mario and how the character originated (donkey kong) is unlikely. so yeh, a nes emu on the gba seems a perfectly acceptable idea. of course these young ones could just download these games from their PCs, but not all ppl no about emulation, and also im sure it would be more fun/cool to hav a portable nes (something which is still better than the original gameboy, in terms of gfx) playing on a flashy lcd screen, than playing on a keyboard on a 17" monitor. just a thought.
