Controller support?

I'm looking for a nice controller to use for an emulator, and I'm pretty fond of Sony's latest, the Dualshock 3. I know that both the 360 and PS3 controllers can connect to computers via USB and are generally well supported, but I don't own either system so I'd like to make sure they're going to work for me before I pony up the cash.

I've heard that 360 controllers are supported by an application called Xpadder that allows you to map keys to the buttons on the controller, which just about guarantees their performance, but I prefer the Dualshock. Is there anything like this program for the PS3? Or, even better, for the PS2? I figure I could save money buying controllers that way, and the PS2 controllers are meatier and feel better in my hands anyway. Is it even possible to connect PS2 controllers to a PC like you can with the new generation of controllers?

XPadder works with any controller, not just the X360 controller. Besides, if an emulators input handling is coded properly, with lots of options for key bindings, you won't need a another program just to set up buttons and whatnot.
