Control stick help

New member
Im trying to play Super Mario 64 as well as Conker's Bad Fur Day, and im at the parts where you must swing the enemy by its tail by swiveling the control stick very fast, however, it seems as though it cant be done on a normal keyboard, and i dont know of any other way to do this either than going to the store and wasting $20 on a game controller.

If anyone can help me with this, id really appreciate this. THANKS!

I'd say that you are stuck until you get that gamepad.

Although don't take my word on it, this is just my opinion as full rotations using the keyboard are extremely difficult to do.

You can try to use the mouse instead of the keyboard. I played around with using the mouse in OoT, and you CAN do those "quick rotations" with the mouse and get the spin-slash. Maybe it will work here too? Give it a try, and when you get done with that part, you can switch back to normal keys. Or to save time you can save the profile of you using keyboard as "Keyboard" and then make a profile with the mouse called "Mouse" and you can just swap profiles.

Sure it means that you'll have to either play in windowed mode to change quickly, or you'll just have to pause the game and swap between fullscreen and normal every time you want to swap.

Up to you. Though I wouldn't call spending money on a controller a waste. If you already have a console system, (PS2, Gamecube, XBox) you could always get an adapter and play with your current controller. Just a thought.

Thank you for the suggestion, however, i cant seem to figure out how to set mouse movements to the analog stick...so if you could possibly tell me how?
(just out of curiosity & because im not getting the said game controller mentioned below for another week or so)

P.S., just got birthday money, going to buy a game controller anyways ;D

What I suggest trying (so you can get the mouse movements set up right) is to click on the "analog" buttons for your directions (up for instance) and then move your mouse in a smooth motion (up in this example) as it counts down to input. You might have to "jerk" the mouse in the needed direction, but eventually you'll get it. To make it easier to know what mouse motion should be what, here's a key:

Up: Mouse: Y-Axis -
Left: X-Axis -
Right: X-Axis +
Down: Y-Axis +

i am apparently not very good at this, or its just not working, but if someone has another way to map the analog to the mouse, or could possibly give me a better explanation? its also 3AM where i am and my brain isnt really workin as fast if you know what i mean.
Thanks

Personally, I don't see why you would think $20 is a waste for an analog joypad. You think the keyboard works, but an analog pad can make all the difference. I'm not saying go out and buy one, but I think it wouldn't be a waste, cause you'd use it, I sure do with mine. Anyway that's my two cents, it's up to you, but there are other ways I'm sure. I'm not much on trying to emulate with a mouse, I prefer the closest I can get. I tried those two games on keyboard (I managed to get the whole spinning thing with bowser to work with it) and it's a lot better with a pad. Here is what I would recommend if you are using a keyboard, place your middle finger on the up arrow key (if that's what you are using), index finger (this is right hand) on the left key and the ring on the right arrow key. or have the last two hover when pressing the up arrow key. when you start to swing, press up first then which ever direction you want to go. Once you get a pattern going, you should be fine. Worked for me, can't guarentee it for anyone else though, since I have finger dexterity.

Okay i understand that a gamepad wont be a waste, but ive tried using the arrow keys before, it doesnt seem to work, and i've been going pretty fast at it too, so i think that my last hope (until i buy the game controller) is to bind the analog keys to my mouse (which i seem too stupid to do)

Ah man, Poato I'm sorry I didn't realize you were using the default Jabo plugin. THAT will NOT support mouse directions and that's why you were having to wait for nothing. I feel like a first-class idiot for not asking you your plugin and assuming incorrectly.

I'm going to make up for that by putting the .cpf file I'm using for Keyboard AND Mouse to run as controller one. As well as a copy of the N-Rage plugin that I'm using. All you'll have to do is to unzip the plugin file to your plugin folder in PJ64, and then unzip the cpf to your main PJ64 folder (anywhere will work, actually, but I think that the "Load" option defaults to the main anyway) and "Load" my profile. You'll be a little surprised just how easy it is to move that way!

Hopefully this will help you out, I also thought to provide a "configuration" key to this... because I made mine a little differently than the defaults. That'd be the .txt file.

Dont worry about it Tre, you've done more than help me with this and you dont have to apoligize for not asking me about my plug-in, I am a n00b with this whole thing and I only downloaded Project64 so I could play my old N64 games (my N64 kinda exploded, not that the lighter fluid had anything to do with it) and I didnt know anything about Plug-ins and other things like that. So there is no need to apoligize and thank you very much for the Plug-in, I will try it right away!

Let me know how it works, okay? I'm pretty confident that this will be a nice solution for you, at least as a temporary thing until you get a gamepad. I only really made mine because I wanted to play OoT like a first-person shooter.

IT WORKED!

Thank you Tre, I got to see the hilarios/not-well-thought-out conclusion to Conker's Bad Fur Day thanks to you!

Plus, because im using the mouse, it seems as though you can swing faster than using a normal joystick.

Anyways, THANK YOU TRE.

Awesome! I'm glad that it's working just as well for you as it does for me. I thought it might. :)
