OK, this is the situation..

I am thinking about going to Uni in either Canada or America next year. Basically I know nothing about it yet, so I need the help from our Canadian/American members.

I need a rough idea of what qualifications I need (I have 3 A-Level's, but I have no idea what they are worth - if anything - over there), I need to know how much it costs, and what the deal with student loans and shit is.

So help!

Tell me anything, it'll be useful.

This is a big big step in my life I'm gonna make here, and I want it to work!

Any websites of Canadian/American Uni's would be helpful, so I can get into contact with a few.

Please guys, lend me a hand. :)

Well, the school you choose should reflect the Major you want. I'm not just saying this because I live in Texas but... Texas is considered to have one of the most distinguished collegiate environment than any other US State (its a fact, not opinion). Michigan is another with the same reputation. We have Texas A&M, University of Texas, University of North Texas, Stephen F Austin State University, and of course the best of them all (that is an opinion) Southwest Texas State University as well as many others. Not an opinion, SWT does rank as one of the top in the nation for Computer Science Majors alongside MIT and Texas Tech. As for cost, I am a permanent resident of the US, a permanent resident of Texas and a temporary resident of the San Marcos (SWT) area. My tuition (out of region tuition) is $1750 this semester. Sounds like a lot but there are many types of scholarships and grants. I have a pell grant and another scholarship that pays about $1200 of that. I havent the slightest clue what it would be for out of state or out of country tuition.

Its your decision, the US offers many other great schools. University of Kansas City is an excellent Med School, Harvard and Penn State are good law schools but difficult to get into. It all depends on what your looking for.

Here are some sites, note that 98% of all official university and college websites in the US end in .edu so if it doesnt there is a good chance that its a scam or something.

Southwest Texas - www.swt.edu
University of Texas - www.utexas.edu
University of North Texas - www.unt.edu
Stephen F Austin - www.sfasu.edu
Pennsylvania State - www.psu.edu
Harvard - www.harvard.edu
University of Kansas - www.ku.edu
University of Kansas (Medical Center) - www.kumc.edu
Texas Tech University - www.ttu.edu
Massachusetts Institution of Technology (MIT) - www.mit.edu
A&M - www.tamu.edu

There are many others in the US. After you tell us your major we might be able to tell you more specific colleges. I chose SWT cause its cheaper than MIT and Texas Tech and has a reputation just as big. :) Its up to you though, there is a lot to chose from. Good Luck.

I have realitives that live near Texas, so that would be good.

Want to do something like Computer Science.

As long as I won't have any problems getting a Student loan or scholarships or grant, then I am definatly going for this.

Keep the info coming people.

And thanks. I appreciate it. :D

*lol*

What I really need is to get in touch with a UK'er who has actually gone to Uni in USA/Canada. You guys must know someone! ;)

It looks like I'm gonna have to live and work in the States for at least a year before I am entitled to any form of grant. That sound about right?

If you work there, could you find out if I can, theoretically, study there and would I be entitled to a loan or grant?

And how much it would cost me?

Thank you! :D

One thing I'd like to note is that tuition in Canada for non-Canadian citizens is amazingly high. If I'm paying $2000 per year for tuition your going to pay 12000. Aparently Canada doesn't like immagrents going to our colleges/unis.

Good luck :)

wow, you need to pay so much to study... Never thought that my country was an exception about it. In France we only need to pay something like 300$ maximum per year whatever uni you ask (if it has a great reputation it is hard to get in but we don't have to pay). And it doesn't cost anything more for foreign students (they can even have financial help for accomodation). I knew that it was expensive in the US but didn't know about other countries....

If you get a job with the University of Pittsburgh your tuition is %5 of normal cost. :)
Students from out side of PA pay a higher tuition because of not receiving state subsidies. There is financial aid availible but I don't know the ins and outs of it. I will look into it for you.
