ive gone throught about 25 CD-Rs (the brand apparently works, because utopia does), about a dozen different burning/image programs, and plenty of cans of mountain dew trying to get backups to work because my shenmue disk 1 (my favorite game of all time) is scratched enough to not work on my DC so i want a backup.

however, not just with this game but with plenty of other commercial games, i CANNOT get them to work even with the many tutorials and FAQs ive read.

using alcohol 120% i have made .ccd's, .cue/bins, .mdfs, and tried all of them through the virtual drive.

enough jargon.
now to the problem.

i do get to the screen where it thinks it is a music CD, and the FAQs say that it turning it into a selfbootable should work (since i have XP, and im using the right drive) BUT THIS IS A COMMERCIAL GAME BACKUP! when i explore the disk there are only 3 text files, so i cant use selfboot to make a bootable image w/o ip.bin or whatever.

i am insanely frustrated and ive been at this for 3 days already so Any help would be appreciated.

You cannot create direct GD-ROM --> CD-R/CD image copies from your original discs, because normal DVD-ROM drives cannot read Dreamcasts GD-ROM discs. More specifically, GD-ROMs use a different filesystem and disc structure, and so normal drives cannot read the high density sections of the disc.
