Hi, I'm not sure whether this will help the coders of Dolphin at all, but have a look at this screen from Supersmash. By the looks of the shadows, I'd say they're using some sort of Stencil shadowing technique. I'm not sure whether it's really a stencil buffer they're using or just an alpha...
