Mario at the press start screen is barely there on PJ64 1.6 and if I switch to video 1.52, he's completely gone. How do I fix this problem??

I'm just starting this game and my character is walking at a snail's pace. How can I get him to run??? My joystick is all the way forward, so I assume its a settings problem or something along those lines. Please help!!
